What to do with BP?

Featured Replies

I thought about adding a poll, but didn't. I'd be interested in hearing the opinions, some of which we have in another thread. I'll start:

Somehow, some way, he has to be gone for financial and other reasons. Not sure how that will work. So, yes I'm of the get BP out of Dodge camp.

He's undergoing surgery today. No chance he will get traded this season, in my opinion.

Even if he was healthy, I think he was playing at too high of a level (along with the Reds) to trade.

As MTGL has said, he'll earn his 10/5 rights this offseason. I don't think that's as big of an issue as he suggests, because BP already has a limited no-trade clause.

At this point, given BP's current health, I think the Reds are stuck whether or not they want to be.

Without question. Swing a trade for a solid/servicable 2B, then turn around and find someone who will take him for a couple marginal prospects.

How is BP playing at "too high a level", while you said Prado is struggling this season, when their numbers are darn near identical???

With his injury now, I'm not really sure there is much that they can do with him.

They couldn't move him and contract this past offseason when he was coming off a 100 RBI season and healthy.

This IMO is the end of any postive batting contributions that BP had left in the tank.

If you notice, I said that he AND the Reds have been playing at a high level. Whether people want to admit it or not, BP has played a role in that. He has hit in the middle of the lineup and has played outstanding defense, per usual.

He was an All Star in 2013 & also won the NL Gold Glove. He may have been on his way to another Gold Glove in 2014.

When you take everything into consideration, BP has been playing at a high level. If the Reds were 10 games under .500, he'd get dealt. But you can't trade him when you're in the hunt.

You hope that he recovers and continues to play a gold glove 2B while hitting a productive (if even slightly reduced) average. No trade options so if you want to get rid of him, be prepared to swap one bad contract for another or release him and take the financial hit.

Not many better options than a healthy BP at 2B.

Not many/if any that are in the same salary range. Cano? nope. Rollins? nope. Uggla? nope.

No better second baseman than BP defensively in all of baseball period.

I don't want this to sidetrack the thread, but here is a question to consider. If you had a choice between which to dump, would you rather dump Phillips or Votto? Personally, I am more worried about the Votto contract as a problem than Phillips. If I could trade Votto and get good value, I would do it and keep Phillips. Consider this hypothetically, not whether you could really make a deal happen. The Votto contract/situation is worse for the Reds than the Phillips contract/situation.

No doubt you dump the Votto contract. Move Meso to first base. Hard to find a 2B with a glove and bat as good as BP's.

And they are ...

Once healed, he'll be the same guy offensively.
