When the head of the household can pocket $80,000+ for less than two hours work, the family is not broke. Besides, Hillary could have turned to trading cattle futures to make some quick cash anytime that she wanted.

In 1999 - the last year Clinton was President the Clintons reported a little over $400,000 in AGI. They had a $179,000 capital gain (maybe from the blind trust).

 

In 2000 - they only reported $357,000.

 

In 2001 - the first year the Hillary provided tax returns as part her campaign their AGI was almost $16M.

 

They did not stay 'broke' for long...

 

Not sure what drove some unusual years - in 1996 they show over $1M in AGI. But they supposed donated 50% of that. In 1997 AGI is well down but again charitable gifts show up as 50% of the AGI. Tax-wise those gifts do not help since they obviously are in AMT territory.

 

I though Hillary was on some boards and would have drawn income from those but maybe not.

I think whoever ends up as the R candidate is going to have a lot of fun running against Hillary, if she runs. Even after 40 years of trying to learn, she's nowhere near the politician Bill was and that will quickly become evident.

It would seem they may be pushing this 'just like you' theme.

 

Other themes or approaches would be:

 

- Discuss your record as SoS. But with Benghazi and now Iraq that is probably a subject to avoid.

- Discuss your vision of America. But her vision was Hillary-care, the forrunner to ACA. So that is another dangerous area.

- Discuss your love of the Constitution and justice. But getting fired by a fellow Democrat for ignoring the Constitution and being unethical probably does not play well.

 

I would not doubt that at some point the line 'I feel your pain' will come out. But she ain't her husband. She just can not pull off the 'common folk' persona.
