Named Coach this afternoon.

■ Montgomery County has named Matt Daniel its new boys' basketball coach. Daniel, who played at Rowan County and University of the Cumberlands, has been an assistant at Montgomery County the past two years. He succeeds Jason Holland, and will be the Indians' fifth coach in the last five years. Montgomery County assistant superintendent Phil Rison said Daniel, 26, "was a solid choice from the standpoint he has already developed relationships with the players. He knows our kids and knows our team." Matt is the son of former Rowan County coach Don Daniel, who led the Vikings to the 2005 Sweet Sixteen.

I fully expect a loud thud from Mt Sterling this season. I mean no disrespect to coach Daniel but it's obvious that a once solid program is heading in the wrong direction. Only four applicants for the job. None of which had any head coaching experience.

I think this will be very important. From everything I've heard he is very well liked by those around the program. He seems like someone who will be a great role model for the students and representative of the school.

Typically any team that loses their entire starting line-up (including an All-State player and a couple other All-Region players) is going to experience a down year. I fully expect the Indians to be competitive in the region next year.

 

The last two years have probably been two of the best 3 or 4 years in the history of the program in large part to having a pair of All-State players. Those types of seasons are not the norm. The norm is a team that is somewhere in the 3-6 range in the region with the occasional year they challenge for a region title and the occasional year they struggle to reach .500. I fully expect them to maintain that level of program going forward.

 

With that said, I do think it is crucial for Coach Daniel to stick around for at least a few years. If for any reason (on either side) he isn't back after the upcoming year, I do think it will be difficult for the school to find a suitable replacement.

My point was the parents seem to have found someone that can meet their needs. Any coach needs to be established for there to be any continuity. As long as that Superintendent is there no telling what will happen.

You said earlier that no head coach was interviewed for the position and that is not correct.

Anyone who has paid attention knows what has gone on over there...both athletically and within the school system.

Good luck to Matt! Competed against him in XC while I ran at Mason County and he was at Rowan County.

He teaches at MCIS.

He has the talent to stay near the top of the 10th, but he will not succeed if he has to be constantly looking over his shoulder.
