Travelers on Shaky Ground With Nike

Featured Replies

Here's the facts. Apparently, they only got a one-year contract even after making Peach Jam last year. Usually teams get two or three. I don't think Nike has another team in Kentucky they're looking to sponsor but there's a lot of problems in that organization. Was on a business trip to Nashville last week and ran into one of their former players and coaches and the guy didn't have a lot of good things to say.

So, where are the facts?

Not a lot of factual statements are hearsay and start out "Apparently".

I say "apparently" because I was pretty shocked after their year last year. I have a hard time believing it myself, but this is a guy who played and coached for them. Pretty successful businessman down there. Can't stand the older guy that runs the team. Not saying he's right, but when I told him I was from KY, he asked if I'd heard of the Travelers. When I told him I had, that's when he starting talking.

If a guy's first question to a stranger after finding out where he is from is to set up a bash session regarding an organization that he just left....I'd be searching for the other side of the story. Successful businessmen have better things to talk about than an AAU organization. Had it come up in casual conversation, then I'd lend it more credibility. Get the other side of the story, and then let us know. Disgruntled parents are everywhere.

It did come up in casual conversation. We were just talking about basketball. Talked a lot about the NBA playoffs, the NCAA tournament too. Turns out we both just like basketball and it was only one small part of the conversation.

I'm not sure what you mean about being a disgruntled parent. I'm not and he's not. I don't have a son that plays basketball and I don't think he does either. He left the organization some years back he said. Not anytime recently that I gather. It was just a conversation that came up as a coincidence that I found interesting.

I personally wouldn't put a lot of stock in this, as I have a hard time believing they'd make another move so soon.

No idea if there's any merit to it or not. Just an opinion from a guy that used to play and coach for them. Not sure how much he knows or doesn't know. Again, meeting him was coincidence, and I don't have a dog in the fight. But this board is for discussion and I thought it was interesting. I'm not reporting a news story, just passing on what I heard.

So they do or don't have a contract with Nike this season?

Where is Traveler Tradition at?

If they aren't sponsored by Nike they can't be in the EYBL can they?

Most Nike programs go through this. It sounds like its a contract year for them. They are sponsored by Nike this year and if things go well the contract will be renewed. There are a lot of teams in their contract year this year around the country.

Gotcha. Hopefully they can have a good enough year for Nike to renew their contract. I think Travelers is good for our state.

Great info....thanks!!!

I left the program. Working on my doctorate.

No idea what their contract status is.

Dang. I hear that. Good luck with your doctorate. :thumb:
