World's Banana Crops In Trouble

Featured Replies

So much for the bananas and honey in my granola. Bananas gone, bees gone.

In that case, it's a good thing I bought enough to last a few months when I was at the grocery today. Wait …

Yeah... good luck with that.

Well... you could always dip them in chocolate and roll them in nuts and freeze them. That sure makes for a bomb of a tasty treat. Yum!

Have always loved bananas.

I prefer them a little on the green side.

I like mine bright yellow, but not yet bruised or brown. Not keen on mushy, but can't stand "not ripe enough" for it taste like I'm eating grass or something.

I buy about 6 or 7 at a time when they are mostly at various stages of green.

Living alone, I'm the guy who must yank one from various different bunches because one bunch itself will ripen on the same schedule, and will not be conducive to my needs.

The average shopping Mother for her family probably hates types like me, for we're the ones creating a "bunch of lesser bananas to the bunch", than how they are originally stocked.

I assume that with much to choose from, they manage, and I don't cause them too much stress, other than the fact that sometimes they can't just grab one bunch and run.

I'm assuming also that it's never crossed their minds why some people pick and choose from various bunches.

I've encountered rolled eyes of disapproval, and under the breath mumbles of disgust, but I've not the time or energy to start a campaign to make those that don't understand, become privy to other existences outside of the typical family makeup, and that others too might have varying agendas that they've not ever taken into consideration.

I do first select from the singles pile of nanners that are already there from folks just like myself who've lent their hand in creating a such a singles pile.

Trust me I'm not the guy that leaves his cart in the lot waiting to smash into other cars, and I'm not the guy that lazily places frozen meats, dairy items or any other items willy-nilly somewhere when I've changed my mind about purchasing them.

I am however the OCD guy who will track down an employee to alert them to it when I see it, because I have a hard time passing it up.

I casually and diplomatically send the message to them in so many words that I hope that they (For only God knows how long it's not been properly chilled) don't just place it back amongst the chilled items for obvious reasons. They, being employees that see this far too often, typically share with me the wonder of such subjects that are too lazy to put things back where they belong.

I am one of those people who doesn't put things back where they belong if I decide not to purchase. That does not include frozen foods, meat or vegetables/fruit. Other items are fair game. I look at it as job security for whoever's job it is to put those items back where they belong. :thumb:

I had this very conversation about bananas with a fruit supplier contractor at the local Speedway a couple years ago. The guy was there doing something with the fruit baskets one morning, I was getting a banana, and we somehow struck up a conversation. He gave me a little history about the banana, and proceeded to tell me that, due to a coupe of different reasons the worlds crop was so susceptible to disease that we were just a finger snap away at any given from not having bananas. And that it would eventually happen. Looks like he wasn't too far off base.

In that case, it's a good thing I bought enough to last a few months when I was at the grocery today. Wait …

:D Let them get good and ripe, peel them and freeze them. Makes for some really good smoothies if you like them.

I'm gonna have to have Corn Flakes with bananas tonight for dinner. Got a craving.

"There's always money in the banana stand ..."

You're bluffing, I just know it, to rouse up my OCD to try to get me out of sorts. Not gonna happen and I'm not buying it.

The entire community here on BGP is OCD, and is the common denominator that gels us together... so I'm not about to believe that anyone of us would do that.

Besides, there's not a duty specific job at the market for this alone, so it's always annoying to the employee who must mind numbingly do it.

If they did hire for that job, my OCD self would love to take it on. I'd keep the place in tip top shape.

Anyhow... nice try.
