Definitely. Both he and his brother are great students. Their mother is the school's AP Calculus teacher and does a great job.

Congrats to cov-cath both teams played a heck of a game. But Clay is gonna be scary next year. Those 3 sophomores are legit. I know farmer is getting a lot of pub. Right now but Blake Smith is the best of them IMO. Smith plays great defense and is as athletic and long of a guard you will find. Mark it down Smith is a stud and people will really see it this summer and next year when he gets more touches

Really pleased with Clay County's performance tonight. They are scrappy and I think they had something to do with Cov Cath's "bad performance". Not many gave them much of a chance, but I had a really good feeling about them opening some eyes.

 

Farmer and Allen played well and our wings got penetration and were unselfish in dumping off to the bigs when they did. Chip had a great game as well and did a good job of finding his shot while still keeping the entire offense in rhythm. Trey Farmer, Blake Smith, and Wes Wolfe are all Sophomores. Farmer didn't play as a freshman and wasn't in the best shape this year for awhile, but that should change next year. Ryan House, the 6th man, is a freshman.

 

Next year, they'll lose Allen and McDaniel, which are obviously huge cogs, but they have a nice core too.

They call it the "sumo chant" nowadays. :wacky: I love how as the original initiators of cheers come and go through Cov Cath, the message behind things is completely lost. That chant was originally a haka (

). Hakas are traditional to New Zealand, and they are essentially war dances performed by warriors before a battle to frighten their opposition.

 

There's a similar chant called "Cha-Cha Koo Lay" that Cov Cath has been doing since the early 90's. It was started at Cov Cath by then teacher/assistant soccer coach Mark O'Connor (now at Beechwood), who had been taught the chant in college by a Ghanian teammate while they were both members on the school's soccer team. The words were all African - Ghana's native Akan tongue to be exact - and the meaning was unknown to O'Connor. By the time my brother-in-law had gotten to Cov Cath (class of '11), it was "well known" amongst the Crazies in the student section that when they did that chant, they were reciting a fearful war cry from Africa about fighting in battle and destroying their enemies, when in all actuality, they were reciting an African children's poem about learning their different body parts.

The Haka originated back in 2009 if I recall. It was at the CCH Highlands basketball game. Domata Peko of the bengals nephew was a senior there and did the haka in front of the colonel crazies before the game. Tucker Browning as a retaliation did it as well and the tradition kinda started there.

Agree that Blake Smith is a stud. I'm a big fan of all the Sophomore class' games.

Crazy to think what might have been in this one. Nuts that it was the Colonels' closest contest of the Sweet 16.

 

Shooting free throws away from the Crazies, I think you'll see that the Tigers shot a much better %. Hats off to the Crazies for making a real difference in this Sweet 16.

They were in full force last night. The wave was fun.

Much better. I'll put it that way. I'll try to get season stats if so, but, without seeing the percentages, I'll say that the Crazies had a statistically significant effect. Hats off to them. I wish Jeff Ruby, then Clay County, would have fed them pizza the whole game.

 

Without the Crazies, I don't know if Cov Cath wins the tournament. I'd go that far even. A "6th man" if I've ever seen one.
