Highlands 2004 pulling the upset against the 5 time defending champions Boyle Co!

Was it 4? I thought the won 1999 thru 2003. They didn't play regular season that year. Boyle had handled the Birds in the previous year's championship.

Danville in 2002 ending Boyle's consecutive games streak.

Caldwell County in '98. I still have no idea how they won that game against Danville.

 

Hazard in '11 against Mayfield. I am not sure anyone saw that coming.

 

Agreed. Both were shockers at first going into the game, but not once the game was being played.

 

Caldwell County that bunch was highly underrated IMO. Their QB, Steward Childress went onto sign with Murray State and started for them at QB as a true freshmen (earning an OVC post season award or two I believe). He had a good career there, before having a season ending injury or two during his later years. They had another kid, Jerrold Fuqua who was their stud RB (1st team All State along with Danville's Britt that year) who also signed with Murray State. I remember Caldwell having some mismatches out wide, too. Danville was very little in the secondary that year, and Caldwell had some long and rangy wide outs that really hurt the Admirals.

Hazard was every bit as athletic as Mayfield in 2011. I wasn't expected that either, but then the game started...and, the first couple series you knew that this was going to be a ball game. Hazard wasn't given enough credit that year IMO.

 

Two games that going into them, you wouldn't have predicted the outcome...but, once the games were underway, you could see definite areas where the "underdogs" had some legs up on the competition.

 

Two great games and very vivid in my memory.

2005 4A state championship game pitting heavily favored St.X vs Trinity, having dominated the Rocks in the rival game, X entered this title game a heavy favorite. X took to opening kickoff right down the field and scored, only to have the extra point blocked. That block, as it turns out, was a momentum changer. From that point on, Trinity methodically dominated the remainder of the game, which included stopping X on 4th and 2 inside the 5, under 2 minutes to go. Believe the final was 13-6. Rumor has it, that this is the game, X felt so confident in winning, they actually had hats , shirts and sweat shirts pre-made and on the field ready to wear.

Old Crow Medicine Show was in concert downtown at The Palace that night, so a few of us bailed out on that game.

2004 Owensboro Catholic were underdogs.

 

They went 6-4 in the season. Won their district.

 

Beat Heath 49-10

Beat Trigg Co. 26-12

Beat Glasgow 28-14

Beat Corbin 34-33 (one of the best and exciting high school football games)

Lost to Belfry 21-28 in the state championship game.

 

Lost 18 seniors from the 2003 team with only 3 starters coming back from both sides of the ball.

 

2010 OC team was kind of disappointing. They were favorites in that game and lost BAD.

Allen-County Scottsville gave Boyle County all they wanted in the state championship game. Not sure of the exact year but it was recent.

Correct.

One of the greatest games I've ever seen (on TV) was the 2002 State Champiionship between Trinity vs. Male. Brohm vs. Bush in just an absolute shoot-out to the end. Has to be one of the best (if not the best) State championship on the State of KY.

You are right about the 5 in a row.

 

But truthfully, Boyle was the underdog in that game. With the absence of Mitchell in the title game it was probably even going in. HHS handled Boyle 21-0 at HHS earlier in the year. Only had one loss. Boyle had that loss and a 1 point loss to Lex Cath to open the season.

Pburg 1993

It's not that Pburg was a bad team that shocked everyone, but it was who they beat to reach the Finals. The 1993 Danville team was an absolute machine and probably one of the top 3 or 4 teams in KY regardless of size that year. The Ads had a long winning streak and were playing at home in the Semi's when the Blackcats shocked the State by upsetting them. To this day probably one of the biggest upsets in playoff History.

 

Bourbon County 1997

The Colonels under Dudley Hilton were a 3 seed in their District and entered 7-3 in what was considered a loaded year in the Eastern 2A bracket. They took out an 11-0 Boyle County in the 2nd Round, beat upset minded LexCath in the Regionals, then caught a 13-0 Lawrence County team fresh off their win over #1 Breathitt County (also ending a long win streak) and pulled the upset. They capped it off by winning it all vs. Owensboro Catholic.

 

 

Those top 2 are spot on. 1993 Danville was ranked #1 regardless of Class in Lit ratings. They pummeled the Class AAAA and AAA state runner ups that season. P'burg was a solid team but the weather, the play by the Blackcats. and the stars lined up just right. If Danville pulls it out I think they own the state streak at 59 games.

 

Bourbon was a complete surprise and may be one of the true Cinderella stories in football in KY, ever.

Hazard was good but it was "out of the blue" to most mountain outsiders.
