March 4, 201412 yr As some have mentioned, if the college money is in a UGMA then she would have a right to that. If it is in a 529, it can be transferred to another child. I can see her getting the car if they consider that a gift also. Other than that, see ya later. If the car is in the parent's name, I don't see how she could get it but what do I know. Either way, I hope she doesn't get a cent with the exception of getting her school tuition paid off because I think its too late to pull out now and the fact that most likely the parents had to sign a contract with the school when enrolling there saying that they would pay. I guess we will see.
March 4, 201412 yr The attorney handling her case should be disbarred. This is a ridiculous waste of time and money and points out the worst of our legal system.
March 4, 201412 yr I think I would of had a better chance at winning a lawsuit against my dad than she does. I worked from 4th grade through 12th grade, every job from paper delivery to working at my grandpa's warehouse on weekends to Mcdonalds to Drawbridge Inn etc. and every paycheck I got my dad would take half and say he was putting it away into savings for me for when I graduated. The day after I graduated I come home to find my clothes packed and sitting on the front step. He told me I was grown now and could live on my own. I asked where my money was, he said it was for room and board for the past 17 years. Welcome to the real world. Wow! That's tough. My family didn't have a lot of money growing up, but we had what we needed, and my parents would have made sure, whatever it took, that the kids got what they needed (and/or deserved) . I expect to pass that down to my kids.
March 4, 201412 yr Dad said he was a liberal, so there you go. Has zero to do with anything in this thread.....
March 5, 201412 yr Has zero to do with anything in this thread..... I dont think so. Maybe she got fed up with how he treated her. And LEFT. Canning told the newspaper he and his wife have disagreed on typical family issues. “I’m a liberal, liberal parent,” he said.

Canning told the newspaper he and his wife have disagreed on typical family issues. “I’m a liberal, liberal parent,” he said. I'm still not making the connection between their politics and this happening. In fact I would have expected it to be from a very conservative family where the teen rebels.
March 6, 201412 yr “I’m a liberal, liberal parent,” he said. I am more thinking he was making a statement about his parental tolerance than about his political leanings. I don't think these parents have necessarily screwed everything up...the girl is graduating high school, and she is accepted to college. However, I would read it as well that she has grown accustomed and believes she is entitled to whatever she wants, so better late than never that she gets a dose of reality. It is too bad the other family is meddling IMO, and I don't think I would be very happy with them.

As far as the other family getting involved, it was very eye opening that the father of her friend where she is staying is a lawyer and the one who initiated the law suit. That tells me everything I need to know about the other family.

Canning told the newspaper he and his wife have disagreed on typical family issues. “I’m a liberal, liberal parent,” he said. As in he's very lenient when it comes to enforcing rules....Has nothing whatsoever to do with politics, but don't let that stop ya from getting your obligatory political shot in... I can see it now.... "What the hell Dad? You aren't disciplining me enough!" "I'm leaving!" :lol2:

That tells me everything I need to know about the other family. Agreed. Also says a lot about the type of people she hangs around with. I'm not sure how anyone can have her side in this. When you turn 18, you are legally no longer your parents concern. They have no obligation or duty to provide you with another penny. The sense of entitlement of some people is sickening IMO.
March 12, 201412 yr I guess all is forgiven as the daughter has moved back home. Honor student who sued parents returns home
