It's hard to understand because I don't understand how judges score the stuff. Ignorance on my part. But wasn't the judging an issue in gymnastics a few years ago and it was scrutinized? I wonder if figure skating will be also, because some of the stuff I watched (obviously influenced by the commentary) doesn't match what the score was in my opinion. Again, I watch every 4 years, like most of the rest of you I assume.

As the winter Olympics go I'm a bigger fan of figure skating than most events. I watch things like the luge, bobsledding, curling, etc., and just don't get it.

 

In figure skating I see power, speed, coordination/balance, and stamina. Kinda sounds like a lot of athletic things combined now that I think about it.:idunno:

It was skating at the last Olympics. The French or Italian judge and the Russian judges were in cohoots with eachother. Was rigged.

Nobody really knows how the scoring works. The Russian girl who won gold fell during her routine. How is it possible that someone behind her that had a flawless skate doesn't pull ahead? No one really knows. Lack of transparent scoring is a huge problem.

I'll agree that it's much easier in judged competition. But all sports are vulnerable to corruption in places were transparency isn't a priority for the people in charge. In the United States, referees and the commissioner ultimately answer to the press for decisions they make.

 

I'll never forget the insanity of the USA's winning goal against Slovenia that was disallowed in the 2010 World Cup. The referee was allowed to depart the stadium without having to explain his decision to the press and was never required to make any formal statement of why he thought the goal should be disallowed to the head office at FIFA.

 

Simply would never fly here because people expect that sort of transparency.

Are you talking about the pairs skating with the Canadians and the Russians? In that case it was the French judge in cohoots with the Russian judge, who gave the Russians more points. Canadians were flawless and appeared to be the clear winners, no question. But Russians got the gold. Then they has had a big "skategate" powwow, and they awarded the gold to both the Canadians and the Russians.

Other sports have partial judging, like baseball, there's a judge at the plate calling balls and strikes. Does that make baseball a joke?

Sometimes boxing is. But if you are knocked out, we know it's over. The baseball analogy is not a good comparison. You have multiple plate appearances with about 150-200 balls and strike calls a game, plus one called strike or ball usually does not decide a game. Also, there are so many pitches and games that the players know how a certain umpire calls a game, they adjust.

 

In figure skating it is one or two performances with many different required moves, techniques or whatever they call them, plus 9 judges with apparently no accountability how they score. I don't expect all judgments to be perfect, but there should be some transparency.

 

There is a huge difference to me.
