Best Actors/Actresses/Directors Not To Win An Oscar

Featured Replies

After hearing a lot of the talk about whether or not Leonardo DiCaprio will finally win an Oscar after being nominated for "Wolf Of Wall Street", let's hear who you think are the best actors, actresses, and directors not to have won an Academy Award.

In my opinion....

Actors:

1) Peter O'Toole

2) Ed Norton

3) Leonardo DiCaprio

Actresses:

1) Glenn Close

2) Annette Bening

3) Barbara Stanwyck

Directors:

1) Alfred Hitchcock

2) Michael Mann

3) Paul Thomas Anderson

As far as directors go, it's an easy one...

It is nearly CRIMINAL that Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar.

There are a lot of directors that never won for best director but won for other things.

The two that top the list there are Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick.

Actors = Mel Gibson

He won for Best Picture & Best Director for Braveheart but he's never won one as an actor. In fact, I don't think he's ever even been nominated for Best Actor.

Absolute truth. He DID get an honorary "Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award" from the Academy in 1967, but the fact that North by Northwest wasn't even nominated for Best Picture is ridiculous.

Actor:

1) Don Cheadle

2) Liam Neeson

3) Leo

Actress:

1) Naomi Watts

2) Amy Adams

While I'm here upset about this, add Robert Altman to my directors' list. And Sam Peckinpah and John Cassavetes.

Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were decent, but I can't understand why I'm actually supposed to care about David O. Russell. I KNOW that movie's going to win Best Director this year and it absolutely shouldn't.

In that sense it's good to know that times haven't changed. Although at least when Welles got beat it was by John Ford. Alfonso Cuaron is going to lose out this year to some dude named Russell that I'm not going to care about in five years.

Maybe this is the problem. I'm not old enough to remember some of the guys that actually beat out these legends way back when. Joaquin Phoenix is great, but his two best roles he was nominated and lost out to people I thought were better that year.

When he was nominated for Walk the Line, he got beat by Philip Seymour Hoffman in probably that guy's best performance in Capote. (Although the best performance that year was really Terence Howard in Hustle & Flow.)

When he was nominated for The Master, he got beat by Daniel Day-Lewis' Lincoln performance.

...although now I'm getting snippy about people who totally deserve awards since the thread is about great actors who haven't won and not necessarily snubs. I'm going to calm down and go eat something.

Another for the actor column is Ed Harris....Very underrated IMO.

Here are some actors to consider:

Brad Pitt (3 acting nominations; 1 producer for Moneyball)

Johnny Depp (3 nominations)

Liam Neeson (1 nomination)

Ed Harris (4 nominations)

Will Smith (2 nominations)

Harrison Ford (1 nomination)

Albert Finney (5 nominations)

Joaquin Phoenix (3 nominations)

Robert Downey Jr. (2 nominations)

John Travolta (2 nominations)

Tom Cruise (3 nominations)

Glenn Close (6 nominations)

Julianne Moore (4 nominations)

Sigorney Weaver (3 nominations)

Michelle Pfeiffer (3 nominations)

I'm actually surprised I forgot about Will Smith. Although, he typically plays the same role, or variation of role, in everything he's in. His best work was The Pursuit of Happyness IMO.

Johnny Depp. Nominated three times, never won.

And did you Getslow or anyone else watch The Master? I caught it a few weeks ago. HORRIBLE piece of incoherent dribble, I don't know how it got voted for an Oscar in any category to be quite honest.

Peter O'Toole has to top the list for actors. Don Cheadle was mentioned, I like him a lot as an actor and is very good. I don't know enough about directors through the years to really make a list, but agree that if Hitchcock can't lay claim to one, then it definitely takes luster off the award.

Ali.
