February 7, 201412 yr How many 20 year olds are? I bet numbers would be similar. If any of us was the parent of an 18yo phenom, I wonder if we'd have a different point of view. If money was that important I would send them over seas for 2 years.

Clearly I would take the money in a second but I'm justifying this from the NBA side. It's a no no-brainer. They are looking out for the best interest of the league. In reality we are talking about a very very very small amount of players that would be truly ready out of HS. For every guy that makes it out of HS another 10 probably fail.

I'm not sold there would be any fewer duds in the league than there are now. If nothing else, it would allow GMs to evaluate kids for an extra year. On that point we agree.

It should be considered illegal if we had any sense of direction about how sports operate as a business, but we permit them to operate as a monopoly since they engage in collective bargaining... and because we love our sports and want to protect them. If I had my way, they'd be forced to eliminate barriers to entry, which would mean they couldn't charge exorbitant franchise fees, the draft would be done away with, and any rules designed to limit competition such as this one would be barred. But that's never going to happen because we coddle our favorite industries with protective rules.

An individual team could not then decide to simply ignore the rule as should be their right as they're supposed to be independently owned. But what we have instead is collusion among the 30 corporations that make up the league in order to prevent competition for top players. It's the union and the league working together as one unit to protect themselves in a way that should make fans furious.
February 7, 201412 yr How many of these freshman would be ready to play 35 minutes a night for an NBA team? Few to none. But the entire system of sports in the United States is turned on its head to protect unions and franchise owners. The whole thing needs massive reform.

Pro sports owners are looking out for their own long-term interest when they swindle state and local governments into paying for brand new arenas. Doesn't mean the public should like it. In most cases the public is given the chance to vote down those stadiums. That's on them as much as anyone...

They aren't the only ones to pull that off
February 7, 201412 yr I love it as a fan of both the NBA and College basketball. But like Getslow said it doesn't sit well with me to limit the next Lebron James or KG, no matter how rare that may be. I would think NBA vets would be jumping up and down for this so they can get an extra year or two of contracts. Can we start the rule right now so everyone for UK can come back next year?
