BluegrassPreps.com Boys Rankings Discussion (2-5-14)

Featured Replies

If Lincoln County was without their PG for that loss, that explains it and should be ignored in the rankings, IMO. He makes the team at least 20 points better by himself.

Lincoln was also without timmy, for that game, and it was early in the season

Again, a very reasonable comment. But ...

...is he worth 27 points? (not being facetious; serious question. I don't know the kid)

...the South loss to Collins is being used as part of the argument on behalf of this ranking. The South v Collins game was the second game of the season. Can't use the "early game" point both ways in the same debate.

I can even buy the argument that Lincoln has progressed more than South Oldham since that game (I don't think there's much proof for that, but let's accept that as fact for a moment.). But are we honestly saying that Lincoln County has - since that game - erased a 27 point differential, and is now a mid-top 20 team while South should be unranked???? We're saying that Lincoln not only would win a rematch, they would win it handily??

By the way, all South has done since that game is go 12-1.

Not much logic to support such a proposition. Seriously, in 35 years of covering HS sports, I've never heard anyone make this kind of assessment when comparing two teams.

I don't recall saying that one game makes a ranking. But, IMO, one game can debunk a ranking. I've been very involved in national collegiate rankings in the past as a voter, which doesn't make me an expert by any means, but it does provide me with some insight into the thought process.

Yes, maybe even 40 points.

A surprising omission in the poll is Taylor County. Would have expected them here. One point loss to Cordia; nine point loss to Lincoln County; beat Elizabethtown by 12. Body of work seems to indicate that they belong with this bunch.

17 wins on the season....only three losses vs. KY teams. Extraordinary talent on the team.

I think Taylor is close to being ranked & the Elizabethtown win is most certainly impressive. Aside from that W, however, there isn't much in terms of quality wins IMO.

But you're right about their talent & I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a rankings appearance.

During that 12-1 stretch for South Oldham, which is undoubtedly impressive, do you feel like they have wins that are better than the following Lincoln County wins during the same time-frame: Bullitt East, Doss, Taylor County, Bryan Station? Not to mention a pair of 2-point losses to LexCath & Montgomery County?

From my vantage point, Lincoln's schedule has been stronger & their wins more quality.

I say all of that not wanting at all to take away from South Oldham or to minimize their accomplishments. I've not seen them, but from what I'm looking at, they seem to have a formidable team that will contend in the 8th Region.

On erasing the 27 point difference since then...PRP beat NewCath 78-70 two days before Christmas. Three days after Christmas NewCath beat PRP 67-51. That's a 24 point swing in less than a week.

I wasn't there for the Lincoln/South Oldham game, but I don't think it's at all a stretch to believe that kind of ground could be made up.

I also don't believe anyone is saying Lincoln would win a rematch handily. Quite the contrary, I'm sure it would be hotly contested--as are a lot of games involving teams we have ranked vs. teams we don't have ranked.

Hard to justify the Lincoln ranking, IMO.

South Oldham 80, Lincoln County 53

South Oldham is unranked. Either South Oldham is grotesquely under-ranked in this poll, or Lincoln is over-ranked.

Lincoln was playing that game without their best player who also happens to be their point guard. I'll also add that people who saw that game said that South Oldham shot an abnormally high percentage from the three point line.

With all due respect CM, isn't that what you're doing? How can we use the win for South over Lincoln the 2nd week of the season without their best player, yet throw out the loss by South to Collins? I don't follow the logic.
