Another reason for the lopsided score was Beechwood could not break the press and Holmes had easy transition baskets. the second when Holeswas in their half court offense, the tigers sat back in a 2-3 zone and just let Holmes take threes without any pressure. It was like shooting practice. They were drilling them as most teams have a good shooter or two. On the first half court set, Housely got the ball at the top of the key in 3 point land and was looking to run a set play and saw that no one came out (he held it looking for the pass for 3-4 seconds), so he just shot it. Beechwood almost said go ahead. It really was ugly.

Holmes reserves outscored their starters by 10-15 in the second half. Many of the reserves played minutes in the first half. Bottom line, in these seed games, just like football district games, what do you do? I know when Holmes plays Highlands and CCH in football it is usually over in the first quarter and those teams play their starters about half the game. It is what it is. Most coaches are not going to run the score up and Booher didn't.

If he made the one foul shot he should have been awarded and then they realized he should not get a 2nd I don't see why they started over. Nothing was gained. I would think they would have simply awarded the ball out of bounds to the other team.

Apologies to Walter, the scoring was a little off compared to what was in the home book which is what I have to go by. Not much for me to say about the game, except for very painful to watch. More than just pressing full court, Holmes just kept constant pressure on our guards which led to the 22 turnovers, 17 in the 1st half. I think our first four possessions ended in Markel McClendon steals.

 

I've only been in Northern Kentucky since the 2007 season and other than the state championship team, this is the best Holmes team I've seen. Their quickness is off the charts. Things don't get easier for the Tigers, as we travel to CovCath on Monday, host St. Henry on Wednesday and travel to W------ on Saturday. I'm a Reading alum so it's hard to say their HS' name. It's a team in the Cincinnati Hills League with the nickname Cowboys.

I was at the game and not far from the pep section in question, and nobody meant any harm. The only time some folks became uncomfortable was when the chant of "A-C-T" went up. Nothing to fight over, but the old suburban-schools-are-smart-and-urban-schools-are-athletic stereotype is unappealing even when it's just in jest. Beechwood is an acknowledged academic powerhouse whose programs should be admired and emulated, but I am under the impression the current Holmes team carries a decent GPA and has at least one Kentucky Governor's Scholarship candidate on the roster.

 

And believe it or not, Holmes students are surprisingly quiet at home games -- no targeted chanting, anyway. Holmes parents and alums, on the other hand, have been known to chime in on occasion.
