Steals are misleading when it comes to one's ability to play D. Yes, they're nice but they have no direct correlation to one's ability to guard the PG and redirect him and get him out of his desired offensive set.

IMO, steals are the result of good defense.

 

For example, if I'm the "best" defender on the team, I'll be guarding the #1 player...I will cause the turnovers, but somebody else will get the "credit" for the steal.

 

There is no doubt that NKYboy is biased towards TT - that is not taking anything away from Timmy, who is a very good HS basketball player; however, he is NOT the best defensive player on the team.

Brossart's Jimmy Uebel deserves to be mentioned in this discussion as well. Another who normally draws the other team's best player. A big guy for a perimeter player, with long arms, good quickness for his size and a lot of "want to"!! Good defensive rebounder also.

 

I'm another who's high on CCH's Kurt Bovard (must have had 5-6 back tip steals in the Brossart game), Simon's Mike Hester, and PC's Pat Elliot.

Josh Keener is a fantastic defender. He can guard. Strong kid.

 

Chris Bray of Boone County put 7 of his 8 three pointers in the win vs Holmes on Duran Jefferson. Duran is a decent on ball defender but not very good when the basketball is not in front of him.

In regards to Vories and Johnson from Highlands, Johnson is very good with his timing and help defense and Vories is one of the top steal leaders in Northern Ky. In fact, during the Holy Cross game HHS was down 6 points at Half time and to start the 3rd quarter Vories made 2 big steals coming in from behind Ryan Bussey to start a 16-0 run for the birds. Vories had 10 points in the quarter to take the birds from a 6 point defecit to a 10 point lead before a desperation banked 3 brought it down to 7 at the end of the quarter.

I just have a hard time give the nod to 3 guys off one team for top 10 defenders in the region. When both times I've seen them play they have been forced to play zone because of lack of quickness to guard in man to man.

Just because a team goes Zone doesn't mean they aren't a good defensive team.

How much zone did Highlands play against Holy Cross as oppossed to man. Very little. They showed zone on a few occasions that was disguising their man to man. Quickness had nothing to do with it, they were beating Highlands on back door cuts to the basket because of the overplay of the passing lanes. If I recall Highlands defense held the Indians without a point for 7 minutes and 59 seconds of the third quarter. That did not occur because Highlands was playing zone defense. I do not know that any one player on Highlands team is a great defender, but they do play very well within the system that Willie employs.

Come on give Scruggs some credit, he may be physical but his arms are so long. HC season has been based on great defense and 3pt shooting.

 

Your going to be hard pressed to convince me Voriees is a top notch defender as well as Tanner Johnson. Ben G. is their best defender. I would say Bueter is NCC's. Your going to be hard pressed to convince Schult is any better than Scruggs defensivly as well.

 

I understand Scruggs is not prolific on offense. But what HC has done against oppenents this year with Scruggs being their only real post presence until Will Eiferts late emergence, has to be one of the best stories in the 9th this year.

So when they played man-man 90% of the Holmes game they didnt show they stick to their guns and live and die with man to man? Or maybe when they played a very big and quick Brossart team man-man the whole game outside of 2-3 minutes of zone. They have been likened to one of the best defensive teams in the state overall so why wouldnt you consider 3 of their guys?

 

Look at def scoring avg in the paper next week and then see who ranks up there among the top 5.

I never said that, Highlands is a good defensive team. But they don't have 3 indivduals who I would stack up as the best defenders in the region. You can be a great defensive team without great indivdual defenders and outside of BEN G this is the case for Highlands.

Serisously they must teach man to man different in Ft.Thomas. Everyone time I see Willie Ball his basic defense is a zone defense with some man to man principles. But it is not a true man to man defense. Its not a bad thing, Willie wins. I'm not discrediting that. But lets call it as it is.

I will give you that... its not a traditional man to man... stay with your guy at all times. They do a lot of switching and cutting off passing lanes.
