#1- Trentman pushes Mustangs to 3-0 week

One of the 10th's hottest teams continued to sizzle last week, led by one of the 10th's hottest players: Alex Trentman. Three times Bishop Brossart took the floor & three times the 'Stangs were victorious. Victim #1 was Holy Cross on Tuesday night, as Trentman's 21 points & 14 rebounds helped Brossart dominate the visiting Indians 75-57. Two nights later the 6'7" senior tallied 16 points & pulled down 9 boards in a convincing 66-25 road win over nearby Pendleton County. And in Saturday's Quarterfinal Round matchup in the 10th Region Class "A" Tournament, Brossart's main man poured in 32 points on 9-13 FG shooting, while also hitting 14-17 FT's and grabbing 7 boards, as the 'Stangs doubled up Augusta 76-38. Trentman's front court sidekick Drew Burns added 18 points, 7 rebounds, & 5 assists. For the season Trentman is averaging 20.4 ppg (65.1% FG's) & 8.3 rpg.

#2- Indians remain perfect

We say Brossart is "one of the 10th's hottest teams" because of Jason Holland's Montgomery County squad. The state's 9th ranked team laced them up just one time this past week & was dominant. Harlan County traveled to Mt. Sterling on Saturday & received an 84-53 whipping. The duo of Bryan Wallace & DeAnte Cisero was outstanding. Wallace scored a team-high 22 points & swiped 7 steals, while Cisero added 18 points, as MoCo started the 3rd quarter with a 22-1 run. With the win, Holland's bunch improved its record to a perfect 15-0--one of three teams in Kentucky with an unblemished record (Covington Catholic & Wayne County are the other two).

#3- Campbell County wins 1, loses 1

The Camels hosted John Paul College (Australia) on Wednesday and placed 4 players in double figures. Corey Holbrook led the way with 20 points, while Luke Franzen scored 17, & Deondre Jackson 12. Sophomore big man Matt Wilson continued his strong play with 11 points, 18 rebounds, & 3 blocked shots. Saturday saw Lexington Christian travel to Alexandria, fresh off road wins at Lexington Catholic & Dunbar. The Eagles continued their winning ways, outscoring Campbell County 18-9 in a decisive 4th quarter. Wilson was again the Camels' leader in the loss, scoring a team-high 14.

#4- Royals split weekend games

Mason County hosted 9th Region foe Boone County on Friday night & the front court was key in a 64-57 win. Junior big man Dorian Henry led the way with 17 points (7-10 FG's) & 7 rebounds. Fellow junior Jake O'Mara added 13 points & 6 boards, while senior center Shawn Johnson contributed 9 points & 16 boards. Saturday was a different story, as the Royals took on 15th Region power Johnson Central. The bigs played well for a second straight game, as Henry again led with 16 points & 10 rebounds, while Johnson finished with 12 points & 13 rebounds. But the Royals had no answer for JC's Mr. Basketball candidate Shane Hall, who dunked his way to a game-high 31 points as the Golden Eagles won 65-54 at Lewis County's McDonald's Hoops Classic. After starting the season 8-0, the Royals have lost 3 of their last 5.

#5- Breds lose by 42, win by 43

The 38th District's top team Harrison County took to the road twice last week & had two wildly opposite experiences. On Tuesday Larry Kendall's squad traveled to Georgetown to face off with 7th ranked Scott County. After playing even with the Cardinals for most of the 1st quarter, the wheels fell off from then on as Scott County won 91-49. D.J. Jenkins led Harrison County with 13 points in a losing effort. Forty-eight hours later the Breds visited Augusta, a team they had beaten by 7 earlier in the year on a neutral floor. On this night, Harrison County used a balanced attack in a crushing 85-42 win. The win halted a 4-game losing streak for the Breds.

#6- GRC ends 4-game skid

The Cardinals also put a stop to a losing streak last week. Coming off a quartet of defeats, GRC outscored visiting Bourbon County 24-12 in the final quarter en route to a 74-58 District win on Wednesday. Four Cards were in double figures led by Riley Caudill's 14 points. On Friday senior big man Khmarkis Blanton scored 23 points, including 20 in the second half, in leading GRC to a 71-53 home win against Madison Southern. Junior guard Damion King scored 18 & fellow junior Braxton Greene added 13. The Cards fell short of victory on Saturday at Ashland (57-52), but had opportunities to win in the waning seconds. King led the Cardinals in this game, scoring a game-high 18 points.

#7- Black Devils win All "A" opener

Robertson County has struggled quite a bit in 2013-14, but the Black Devils have now won back-to-back games, including their only contest of this past week: a 50-45 victory over Nicholas County in the Quarterfinals of the 10th Region Class "A" Tournament. With the score knotted at 36 after 3 quarters, John Brown's squad outscored the Jackets 14-9 in the final frame. Junior forward Dawson Cooper led the way for Robertson with 24 points. Nicholas County had beaten the Black Devils 5 days before Christmas, 59-53 in Carlisle. Brown's team advances to the semi-finals where they will play St. Patrick, a 52-47 victor over Silver Grove in the other lower bracket Quarterfinal matchup. Robertson County defeated the Saints earlier in the year 66-50 in Mt. Olivet.

#8- Augusta's struggles continue

It's been a rough last few weeks for tiny Augusta. The Panthers played twice last week & scored 80 points in the two games combined. First came a Thursday night home loss to Harrison County (85-42). Saturday at noon the Panthers put up 38 points as a team, while Bishop Brossart scored twice that in the Quarterfinals of the 10th Region Class "A" Tournament. Jason Hinson's team started the season with 8 wins, but have now fallen in 7 of its last 9. The average margin of defeat in those 7 losses is 27.4 ppg. The Panthers are slated for just 4 more games in January & the team desperately seeks the return of staring guard Owens Crawford, who was injured in the season opener.

#9- Greyhounds win Class "A" Play-In

Terrence Brooks' Paris team started the 10th Region Class "A" Tournament with a Friday night win over Calvary Christian in the Play-In game, sending the winless Cougars home with a 72-24 defeat. The 'Hounds seem to be righting the ship after a bumpy 0-5 start to the season. Paris is 5-4 since then & are led by 6'3" sophomore forward Koebe Garrard, who is averaging 16.1 ppg & 6.1 rpg. The Greyhounds will square off with Bracken County on Monday night in the Class "A". The winner of that game will have the unenviable task of facing heavy tournament favorite Bishop Brossart in the semi-finals.

#10- Regional Tournament Dates/Times/Site Set

Mason County's Fieldhouse, with its world-renowned popcorn, will be the site for the 10th Region Basketball Tournament. The Quarterfinal round will be played on Wednesday & Thursday, March 5th-6th. The first game each night will be at 6:00 pm & the second game will tip 25 minutes after completion of the first game. The semi-finals will be played on Sunday, March 9th with the first game tipping at 2:00 pm & the second 25 minutes after the first. The championship game will be on Monday night, March 10th at 7:00 pm (h/t to jahearme for the info :thumb:).

Augusta's Brent Bach ( by my count), stands at 2,110 career points. That puts him 112 from the school record of 2222 by Brian Kirk. The Panthers do not play until Saturday this week, when they host Newport. He's still averaging right at 30/game, so it won't be long until history is made.

Good work peoples!!!!

Very intriguing. Montgomery County remains undefeated, is ranked #9 in the BGP Top 20 but are #2 in the 10th behind a team not ranked in the BGP Top 20. Very intriguing indeed.

I think what the nine year old is trying to show are the top story lines of the week. His rankings are much different.

I see it now. The numbers threw me off.

This.

Are Augusta's recent struggles simply a byproduct of the increase in competition, or do they appear to be wearing down? I know depth has been mentioned as a major potential issue for them.

I'm surprised Randy isn't chiming in with something along the lines of "Actually it's 30.033, but who's counting".

In my opinion it's both.

LOL. KHSAA has 29.9, but his 16 from Sat. weren't factored in. It's probably 29.75463

They've def been playing better teams, and playing a lot of games. With Crawford out, an already thin bench gets thinner by moving one in to start.

The Campbell County/Mason County game (at The Fieldhouse) that was canceled on January 7th will now be made up on Thursday, February 6th per Danny Weddle.

Yep, competition.
