I've taken my fair share of shots at officiating in the 9th region in the past but to be honest I have never wanted to do the job and respect and admire those that take the time to do it. For the money they get paid I'm not sure it's worth the abuse that they get from coaches, mouthy players, and loudmouth, ignorant parents. The main thing I want out of an official is to be consistent and if they do that I'm pretty much satisfied. If you think it's easy then give it a try, I'm sure they are always looking for more officials.

Give me the 10th over the 9th any day. Some of the 9th guys act like they have never been to a game.

 

I agree we played at a nineth region team last year, it was a close game, but the officals looked so old that they must have got them from an old folks, er old officals home.

Yes I was a varsity basketball official in TN for a number of years, and in kentucky fow 3 years...before my jjob made it impossible for me to continue.

Yes I have, a jv game, between Deming and Jackson City, it seemed I COULDN'T do anything right either as well as my partner. I got yelled at from both sides, more so from Deming's side.

I refed one summer in a girl's high school league as a precursor to trying to get my license. Needless to say that I changed my mind REAL fast about getting into it on a regular basis.

I have seen Brossart, Silver Grove and Calvary all play multiple times this year. With their locations, they play multiple games with both 9th and 10th region officials. These games are called in completely different styles. I think much of Brossart's recent problems (they have played tough teams) but they aren't able to get away with hand checking in the 9th region, as in the 10th they are. Even this, it seems some officials have a chip on their shoulder that they have to travel from Paris to Silver Grove or that some of these teams don't play an entire schedule of 10th region teams.

 

People should remember, its not what officials call, but a case of what they don't call that makes a difference in a game.

This thread was started to point out the banter that goes on about refereeing, and to point out the direction in which officiating has evolved over the years. I am not surmising whether the refs are good or bad, just how different the game is now then when I played. I personally prefer the way we played it.

I'm sorry if I affended you malachicrunch, I just get frustrated to hear people bad mouth officials. I apologize if I got a little hostile.

The reason that officials are calling a certain way is because they believe the coaches want it called that way. There are two problems. One is that the coaches have too much power in the positioning of officials. The coaches ratings are very influential (80% in my region) in determining the rankings of officials. That's crazy but true. If an officials gives a technical to a coach for whatever reason, that coach is not going to rate that official as high on the annual ratings. That is giving the coaches to much power. I'm not saying that they should not rate them but they shouldn't be as influential as they are. Second problem is with the assigning secretaries not backing the officials, at least it's a problem in my area. The secretaries should back all of the officials in it's association whether they agree or disagree with the official. If an official ejects a coach for whatever, the official needs to feel secure that it's association will back him or her. He or she needs to feel that they are not alone out there and that your decisions will be backed up and not second guest among your peers. I'm sure that there are a few other problems with the system but these are just a few I've noticed in my neck of the woods.

It's just amazing how different the games are officiated from one region to another. That's not saying the officiating is bad, just that some regions allow more contact than others. The 11th regions allows a lot of contact, but I've been told by a Bluegrass official that that's the way the 11th region coaches want it called. If teams from east of I-75 are playing someone in the 11th region they had better tighting up their chin strap and adjust their style for a very physical game, or be prepared for a blowout. The style of play in the Bluegrass (full court pressing, trapping, etc.., for the entire game) makes their team's defenses much more effective when it's a loosely officiated game, regardless of how consistent it's called.

While consistency is important and even a keystone, I think mechanics & knowledge of the rules is just as important. Many coaches I know can live with an official making the wrong call from the right position/angle. What drives them crazy (& should) is the wrong call from a bad position/angle -- particularly if the official is in the bad position/angle because they didn't hustle to get to the right spot.

 

A thorough understanding of the rules is also mandatory. While 99% of the calls are made pursuant to rules EVERYONE knows, you'd be surprised how hairy things can get in that other 1% - inevitably at a critical juncture of the game.
