January 8, 201412 yr And on another note, I'd really like to see Florida State as a member of the SEC. They would fit in really well. College sports are not well served by further consolidation. In fact, another conference stepping up and having several great teams at the top that could challenge the SEC's dominance would be the best thing that could possibly happen to college football. I'm not (fully) buying it. If you watched at all on the breakdown shows during the game, FSU had guys open throughout but Winston never saw open guys down field. He is just not there yet. His performance was great as the game progressed, but I am not going to elevate his performance when the average completion distance was 3.6 beyond the line of scrimmage and a Noles receiver would take off for 50 yards after.

It definitely helps the defense. Winston didn't see the open guys down the field because the O-line couldn't stop the Auburn pass rush. I can't help but think that it made a difference once FSU began hiding their plays. FSU should have been smarter than this from the jump though. It was a complete 180 in the second half.

January 13, 201412 yr Author Avid reader of tomahawknation, so I'd seen it. My initial gut reaction was "Well that's real stupid." You know your former QB coach is on the opposite sideline, you have a month off, and you change.... nothing? Maybe it would be too much to add in a situation where people could get things wrong, but I might have run a single series with the same calls so that he could see that and think that he knew what was coming. Then switch it up and go for the throat. Or, you know, just change it all from the get go and/or hide the plays. It's one of those things that I'm OK with because FSU won, but if they had lost, Jimbo would be getting majorly raked over the coals by the fanbase for that gaffe.
January 13, 201412 yr Author As for next season, I think they're the favorite because of who they're returning, but they're certainly not without weakness. Replacing guys like Jernigan and Jones will be difficult. In the case of Jernigan you saw how much of a difference it made when he had to come to the sideline because he was gassed. Auburn started ramming the ball straight through the middle. I'm glad they got the reliable O'Leary back (his national title performance notwithstanding) as well as Rashad Greene. Losing Benjamin will hurt (as well as my fave Shaw), but that'll be about the only thing on offense that will. I think Karlos Williams will step in nicely for Freeman and FSU's line returns four seniors - straight nasty. An entirely senior O-Line with a Heisman Trophy winner behind it? Yes please.
