Lafayette 57 Newport Central Catholic 55

I would say the Breds did perform pretty well thus far down in Louisville and Lexington against some Top teams statewide. They held on to beat Cordia who was relentless and took PRP to the woodshed who is also a pressing team. They just ran out of gas and Lafayette had a nice press.

Not knocking NewCath... but man ...committedhey just had a bench so they can rest a little they could've held on to this game. That is definitely their downside.

A deep bench has absolutely nothing to do with the turnovers committed in this game....period end of story. They're not tired or winded, they simply made "horrible" decisions.

How will they fix not having a bench? They're a great team, but having no bench to speak of will be the death of them. All the late game mistakes is just being downright ridiculously tired.

I'd love it if there was a fix, but I'm not seeing it except when they had a good lead they should've started slowing the tempo and forcing Lafayette into fouling them. Instead they started playing Lafayette's game and let them control tempo.

They made bad decisions against intense pressure. That can be fixed.

The final 7 seconds looked a little confusing for NewCath. No idea why you have McDonald bringing the ball up the court in that situation.

Agreed.

Pangallo had the runout while NCC was up and he missed the layup instead of pulling it out and running some clock.

I can see that assessment, and coming into the season NewCath was without a doubt the most well groomed, best trained team in the 9th, hitting the ground running, mighty full of stamina.

As you and PurplePride92 have said, they made bad decisions. Under the late game pressure they were facing, and being forced to play at that speed, it just seems that mistakes can be made when your players aren't too fresh, and I can't see that it would be too much of a stretch to suggest it.

A different approach with a sizable lead that could slow the ball up and calm things down to allow them to breath a bit while preserving the lead looked like a good option.

During this time of the game when they were in their half court offense with a good lead they needed to be more patient in shot selection, as well as just rotate the ball and have Lafayette get frustrated into foul trouble, and start adding insult to injury that way. The Breds were rushing shots with a lead just giving Lafayette more time to keep climbing back in by snagging the rebounds off of rushed ill-advised shots.

Perhaps the poor decisions can't be attributed to late game wear and tear, although for many teams with lack of depth that's a common setback, and hopefully they can find a way to eliminate a tendency or tread they're having with top notch teams to have a second half lapse after typically coming out of the gate in games on fire. There's no doubt they can play with anybody, and for their sake I hope there is a fix, and that it's not just mistakes being caused by losing steam late in the game.

I'm all in with the bolded. Different game had they done this.

edit.

NewCath best 1st half team in the state without challengers, however is a 2nd half and like today the folded like a tent.

What was that final play???? The guards with some really bad passing today, in both halves. Ben Weyer was on fire.

Congrats to Lafayette on a very nice comeback.

It's best that I comment no further, trust me.

I just watched the final inbounds play. It seems like it was designed to come into Drew.

It appears when pressure is amped they just cannot get out of their own way. You can bet Holmes will be in their face full court the whole game. The bigs seem to struggle with that. Still not sure if it is depth or just not able to handle pressure for 32 minutes. They wont play many teams of this caliber the rest of the way except Holmes, CCH, and Trinity and Brossart won't be easy.

I got that also. I was curious why he chose to throw to the double team when it appeared he had other options that had less defense. I'm guessing the clock in his head was moving faster than he thought and he just forced the pass.

This last week to 10 days has been invaluable for NCC.

I couldn't agree more.

Ben Weyer needed more touches in the 2nd half, he was in a . "zone" in the 1st half. He is steadily making a name for himself. They also failed getting the ball to Schulte when he had obvious mismatches.

The Pangallo lay up at the end could have " iced" it, it looked like he was anticipating contact when he went up with the shot, just a "tough" break for Zach.

The 3 that Tanner Moeves took with under 30 seconds was a shot I had no problem with him taking, he was wide open, it just didn't fall this time.

Big-time learning experience the last 10 days for the Breds.
