I like it. Never understood why it was allowed but base runners couldn't tackle other players while running.

Hate it. Maybe next they'll make a 9 batter per inning limit, and everybody plays the field for two innings, and gets an AB.

If there is a stipulation that catchers cant block the plate without the ball and if run into the run will count I love it. There is no reason for players to risk injury for barreling catchers to jar a ball loose.

As a former catcher, I'm all for it. Doesn't take anything away from the game, except the potential for serious injury. The catcher is completely defenseless in that situation. No other sport allows you to take out a defenseless player. Are you really ok with what happened to Buster Posey a few years ago, or Ray Fosse (in a meaningless All-Star game) in the 70's??

That is the current rule. Catchers (or any other fielder at any other base) cannot block the runner's access to home plate without the ball.

I'm all for the new rule. Use some version of the high school rule. Works there. I've never once watched a high school game where there was a play at the plate and said "if only the runner would have been allowed to truck the catcher...."

Then by all means let's put up the little batting practice fence to protect the pitchers. Are you really ok with what happened to J.A. Happ, Alex Cobb, or Tony Conigliaro to name a few?

I don't know if I like it but to many injuries might be the right decision.

You can't protect everyone. That doesn't mean you can't protect the catcher.

Catchers take a lot of abuse, so this should eliminate at least one part of it.

You can't just keep over-legislating sports to protect people -- there are some inherent risks that should be acceptable. This is one of them.

It's not an either/or.

 

The rule would require the catcher to give room to the runner. So if that's the case then there is no need to bury the catcher. Again, it works in high school.

 

Your "inherent risk" theory applies to pitchers. I can't think of any reasonable way to protect them from the rare line drive off of the gord. You CAN with a catcher.

 

We now know more about concussions and long-term issues. This isn't the 60s anymore. We've evolved. Rules should as well.
