December 10, 201312 yr On this date in 1967, soul singer Otis Redding died at the age of 26 when the twin-engine Beechcraft Model 18 he was flying in crashed into the frigid waters of Madison, Wisconsin's Lake Monona on his way from Nashville to play a show at the University of Wisconsin. The crash left only one survivor, trumpeter Ben Cauley of the Stax Records band The Bar-Kays. The cause of the crash was never determined. Otis is one of my absolute favorites. Here's a 'Sad Song' in honor of the 46th anniversary of his death.
February 3, 201412 yr The Day The Music Died. Early in the morning on this date in 1959, after playing a show the night before at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, a single-engined 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza 35 crashed into a cornfield shortly after takeoff due to adverse weather conditions combined with pilot error. The pilot and all three passengers, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, were killed on impact. The plane would only seat the pilot plus three, so Holly's bandmates, Carl Bunch, Waylon Jennings, and Tommy Allsup had opted to buy bus tickets to their next show in Fargo, North Dakota instead of chartering a second flight. On hearing that his bandmates were not going to fly, Buddy Holly was quoted to have said, "Well, I hope your old bus freezes up." Waylon Jennings' joking but ominous response to Holly was, "Well, I hope your old plane crashes." Jennings is still visibly shaken by the statement when it is addressed in interviews. Their tour was scheduled to bring Holly, Valens, and The Big Bopper to Louisville, Kentucky eight days after the crash. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04E24MKU3yU Edited February 3, 201412 yr by Colonels_Wear_Blue
February 3, 201412 yr "On This Day In History" is actually not a bad idea for a sticky thread for every day of the year.
February 4, 201412 yr 1789 - On this day in 1789, 225 years ago, George Washington was elected as the first President of the United States. He won unanimously, and remains the only President to have won the election unanimously, although he ran against four other candidates, all of whom won votes: John Adams, John Jay, Robert Harrison, and John Rutledge. In the early days of the electoral college, all of the electors were each allowed a first and second vote for President, and seeing as Washington received votes from all of the electors, his election was unanimous. All five of the candidates ran without party affiliation, and Washington still stands as the only US President without a political party during their presidency. 1945 - On this day in 1945, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin met together for the second time as "The Big Three" to begin the first day of the week long Yalta Conference, in which they determined their ongoing plan towards victory and set out a plan to oversee and control the Axis Powers after their defeat. FDR would die unexpectedly 67 days later. 1974 - Patty Hearst, granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped along with her fiancee from their home in Berkeley, CA by members of a guerrilla group called The United Federated Forces of the Symbionese Liberation Army. After famously being photographed wielding a rifle in a bank robbery two months later, she was arrested in September 1975 and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Her defense claiming to be a victim of Stockholm Syndrome did not hold up. Two years later, her sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter, and she received a full pardon from President Bill Clinton in 2001. 2004 - Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg while attending Harvard University. Originally opened to Harvard students, the website then opened to students of Ivy League colleges, then all colleges, then high schoolers, and now to anyone over the age of 13. As of September 2013, Facebook has 1.2 billion active users and is worth over $15 billion.
