Holy Cross played at Boone Co last night in a triple header. I did the book for all 3 games for HC. Freshman game only had maybe 16-18 total fouls called in the game (Freshman officials must NOT have gotten the memo - LOL), however the JV and Varsity games were similar to what everyone else is saying. You couldn't go 15-20 seconds of live action without a whistle being blown. It's something that everyone will need to get used to but it doesn't make for a very good game to watch. Grade School coaches better start getting the younger kids to shoot more free throws in practice because if this rule or point of emphasis is here to stay, the future if going to a lot about shooting free throws and having a deep bench.

I hate it.

I don't like it either, but I also think we have allowed the kids to get away with hand checking, grabbing and slapping at the ball way to much in the earlier grades and AAU. When they get to a situation where hand checking is being called, they don't know how to play defense. I would much rather have the refs set the tone early and stay consistent througout the game. We need to teach defensive fundamentals at an early age.....but of course defensive fundamentals arent replayed on Sportscenter every night.

I heard from an 8th region official the other night they have been told not to call it so tightly. I have a buddy who refs in the 2nd region and they are told to call it very tightly. Perfect example of why you get so many fan complaints when a team from region A goes and plays a team from region B...the officiating can be drastically different and a lot of time the refs are being directed to do different things in different regions.

 

Glad that I watch games in the 8th, then. The two girls games that I have seen have been business as usual.
