Im not a Florida guy I didn't follow them or Urban back then but I'm sure Both of our coaches should have policed him better. It is hard to police 70 kids, I see that with being around college teams but they could have done better.

 

But to Marcus Hall only thing that would please anyone is a BCS suspension which no coach would do in the country.

I have to disagree with you, he got Hydes attn at the beginning of the year who was never even charged with a crime. Kenny Guiton was told he was gone after Meyer arrived if he didn't shape up and now has become a leader of the team and the 2nd best QB in the B10.

 

Marcus Hall is a turd that's just the way it is. He comes from a program that had produced some turds, same program UK is dying to get into. Tress wouldn't have done much differently given it was such an emotional/rivalry game. Maybe he suspends him a half or doesn't start him against State, Meyer could do the same but it still wouldn't please anyone to he honest. Because if OSU wins people will say he wasn't needed anyway.

 

I think Jim Tressell's handling of the other situations suggests he at least might have handled it differently. He suspended quarterback Troy Smith for a bowl game, and Maurcie Clarrett was gone when his hand got forced.

 

The difference with Tressell is that his downfall was mainly associated with "extra benefits", and plenty of people are now arguing that college players should be paid anyway. Lots of Tressell's problems could also have been him willfully looking the other way and "playing the game" that so many other schools and coaches were. Not so much with Meyer.

 

Personally, I don't have a problem with Clarrett having a smart phone, nice ride, and an occasional dinner when he's bringing millions into the school and his jersey is flying off the shelves in the bookstore while he's got a $13K scholarship for classes he squeezes in between practices.

 

To me, that's a completely different issue than what goes on with Meyer, where actions that do real harm others (i.e., Hernandez, Rainey, etc.) are being swept under the rug on a regular basis.

Suspending him for the first half would be a fair enough punishment in my eyes. I think that would be getting off somewhat easy, but at least it's something.

At the end of the day, you have to admit, that with a call like that where it's coming down to serious intervention with a star player, it's more on the head coach. Strong worked hard (probably harder than he should have had to) just to get where he was, so I can see why he'd defer to Meyer if he went to him with an issue like that and Meyer, his boss, told him to can it.

 

Not saying there wasn't more that both could have done, just saying that Meyer's actions had more teeth than Strong's given the position of each.

What did UL do to the kid who gave the double birds to UK as he was coming out of the stadium? I believe he was a lineman as well.

Actually it is at the end of the day Urbans call. But I blame all coaches. The assistant coaches are just as much play a roll in the day to day with these kids. Really have more one on one than the head coach. They all should have been tell him to cut that kid free. So I blame them all.

For sure. If the same thing happened at UK, I'd be mad that a player embarrassed the University by flipping the double birds AFTER he'd been ejected for throwing a punch at an opponent (and while the offender was surrounded by his own teammates and wasn't retaliating). Really had more problem with that than anything else.

 

With that said, I realize that this probably happens at a ton of sporting events and isn't captured by cameras and replayed on SportsCenter, so it is unfortunate for him in that regard. Also, we don't know what was being said to him, etc. In the end, I think something slightly more than what ended up happening would have sufficed.

 

Also, there are only a few coaches in the nation where this kind of thing becomes the issue it has become, with Urban being one of those coaches, but I think that given his track record, he really needs to put his foot down and keep it there awhile if he wants to rebuild his image.

I dont think any kid should be suspended because of this. Maybe ran until his pukes then run him some more. If it happens a second time then we have a problem.

Your more old school which I can respect. Joker is saying Meyer needs to run a tight ship and show them who's in charge. They all know who's in charge I don't doubt that but the suspension part is preference. If he had been suspended I'm ok with it, run 50 up downs I'm ok with that too.

I've never really understood the "extra conditioning" as a punishment for something like this. You are just making them better to help yourself out. I can see it for minor things like being late for a meeting, missing curfew by a few minutes, something like that.

 

Sitting him when it's going to hurt the team is more of a "this is how much I care about you, don't screw up and let us down again".
