Why does the NFL still allow Ties?

Featured Replies

Games with clocks have them for good reason. Unless it's a playoff and you need a winner, then the two teams played to a deadlock and couldn't sort it out. Mark it as a draw and be done with it. Truth be told, I don't understand why they even bother playing an overtime in regular season games.

I do not care for it, but I do not get offended like a lot of people do when a tie occurs. I think the NFL averages one every 4 years.

This would obviously never happen... But what if every game is a tie?

What? All 16 games, all 32 teams, all 17 weeks of the regular season?

What happens if there's a tie in the AFC/NFC title game? Super Bowl?

I'm obviously speaking in hypothetical terms... Let's just say there's a tie every week. Would that not create an issue at some point?

They keep playing. It is just regular season.

Playing by "first score wins" in OT is much better than a tie, IMO.

Which is pretty much what happens after the first possession. That was the first time ever both teams scored a FG to start OT.

Shouldn't be. W>T>L. It is just different than how we normally view things. 8-7-1 is better than 8-8. There have been multiple seasons where teams are left out because of tiebreakers. If anything, the more ties, the less likely you have a tiebreaker.

I'm of the school of thought that says if you are allowing ties then whey even bother with Overtime in the first place?

Tie's should be wiped off the boards. Play until you have a winner.

Then pre-established tiebreaker methods establish who gets in the playoffs... points for, points against, etc.

Then there's overtime. I'm speaking specifically about the regular season, where it couldn't matter any less if one team actually wins.

Why? If I've watched two terrible football teams battle to a 13-13 tie, then neither team deserves to win and neither should be rewarded for fluking in a score after the game has technically ended.

True but I was never a fan of "first score wins" either. I like KY High School and college better, start on the 20/25 yard line on each team and play it out. Of course the NFL would never do that, then they would have to admit college had something better than they did.

So an NBA game should end in a tie?

^ Sure, if they want. Don't particularly care. If they can't figure it out in the time allotted, then why does either of the teams deserve a win?
