How did Belfry's defense look tonight? Did Austin Hatfield go both ways?

Defense looked better, reacted a little quicker than they have been. With Hatfield at LB and Duty at NG I think it stiffens the front 7 and puts a more athletic team on the field. Belfry's defense dominated the game, however, PCC had their struggles and I don't know how much of that was on them, and how much was due to Belfry's defensive changes. Justice did not play QB after halftime, they moved their best receiver Elkins to QB, where he did not look comfortable. Elkins got hurt after a couple series and they moved their starting RB, Ray to the QB spot in more of a wildcat look. The PCC offense was really hampered at that point and it was hard to get a good read.

 

Austin played defense primarily, but he did play a couple of series at fullback, and scored two touchdowns. I expect to see him play a little more offense moving forward, if for no other reason than it gives us a lot more versatility being able to use that many interchangeable parts. If I were a DC of our opponent I would not enjoy preparing for all the possibilities our skill guys bring to the line of scrimmage.

Belfry dominated PC defensively. Hatfield played the entire game (well while the starters were in) on defense and saw spell duty at FB where he was very effective

 

PC may have had 100 total yards against the Pirate Varsity Defense and Belfry knocked both the starting Hawk QB as well as his backup out of the game.

 

My guess is you see Hatfield continue to have his primary focus on playing every snap on Defense and see him as the "change of pace" Fullback on offense. I like this a lot. Obviously Belfry's optimal backfield is Hatfield, Carr, and Johnson with Dari and Fletcher spelling them... but the impact of a fresh Hatfield on defense has completely changed the look of this Belfry team and means much more.

 

I still like the fact that Bourbon has to game plan all week for when Hatfield is the FB and when Carr is the FB since they are such different runners... they also now have to plan for when Dari is at HB and when Carr is at HB, once again night and day styles.

For those who saw them play last week, how effective was Pope at QB?

 

Before the injury he was a dual threat. Did he run much vs. Mason or was his mobility hampered any compared to pre-injury?

Bourbon is really good. Probably better than last year and they have Dalton Pope back, who was injured earlier in the year in a game against Estill County, but Bourbon hasn't played the schedule that Belfry has, they did beat Mason County, who was undefeated but still no where close to the schedule that Belfry has played.

 

with that being said, I'll take the Colonels in a dandy, due to home field advantage but Belfry will have a load of fans making the trip with them and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Belfry wins.

There is a good video in the Bourbon/Mason thread of Highlights... cant get a real good grip on Pope..but from the little I saw... coupled with the stat lines from the game (1 carry for 12 yards)...he appeared to not be his normal self mobility wise. His arm looked fantastic.

According to the stats on KHSAA by Bourbon County. Dalton was 6/11 passing for 98 yards and 1 TD. 1 carry for 12 yards.

 

Brent Holman had 16 carries for 166 yards and 3 TD's

 

Marquaze Hill had 9 carries for 113 yards and 1 TD.
