Hellbird Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Ever since we had our house built a decade ago we were always the host for thanksgiving and Christmas to both sides of the family. I always preferred hosting over than going out on those days. But after a decade of having everyone over for Thanksgiving and Christmas, this year we have decided not to have company over this year for Thanksgiving. I should correct that, we are having our kids over and significant others (Husband/Girlfriend/boyfriend) but no other family. In years past our Son in laws family would be part of the guests along with mine and my wifes families etc. so that would usually come to between 20-30 people. I am looking forward to it, I am looking forward to not getting up at the crack of dawn to start getting ready etc. I can now sit around watching football games and not worry about anything and if we decide to, do some shopping after dinner. I can't wait for an actualy relaxing thanksgiving dinner for the first time in a long time
Randy Parker Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Guests. I get tired of all the traveling, but the Brown Sugar Pie ends up being worth it.

HAhaha, that is the one thing I will miss I admit, all the deserts...but my girlish figure doesn't need them anyway. OH Randy, everytime I see your avatar it reminds me of something that I always wanted to pm you abbout but I keep forgetting so I will put it here for you. A little tid bit I thought you'd like. The writer who wrote the Christmas Story ( he was a radiko host for wsai in cincinnati in the early 60's) but as you know it was about his life. Well my mom knew him, she actually babysat for him. Thought you'd like that.

Thanks for sharing, HB. :thumb: I edited it, i didn't mean a newspaper writer but a radio host among being a writer etc. He worked in cincinnati in the early 60's on WSAI radio station. They called him "Shep" Sorry it took so long to tell you lol. I love that movie and have the leg lamp on my desk at work for the past 6 years lol.

I have a mini leg lamp as well. It's a must-have. :lol2:

I didn't know if you saw them or not but last year Hallmark had a brand new series of ornaments about the movie. They even have the christmas village you can get, the store, the house etc. Our family traidition is to watch that the night of Thanksgiving and to watch Natinal Lampoon's Christmas vacation the next night.

Going to have to check out that village. Our family tradition is to spend about three hours on the road, eat two meals at two different homes, and then get home at around midnight. I would like to be a host on Thanksgiving for just one year, but I am fighting a losing battle with that one.
Jumper_Dad Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 My wife's extended family takes over our church's fellowship hall on Thanksgiving. Between 30 and 50 people come each year and we eat, sit around and talk then eat some more! The aunt that's in charge actually has a meeting each year assigning what food everyone is to prepare and bring, meeting was last weekend...:lol2: I enjoy it but HUGE downside is that everyone takes their leftovers home when they leave, so no late afternoon Turkey and Dressing sandwiches when you get back home if you didn't bring the turkey and dressing. Upside is we make homemade Mac and Cheese with white American cheese and apple dumplins and we are done cooking for Thanksgiving...and by "we" I mean my wife!
Bengal Maniac Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Usually are guests, but this year we are hosting. I am looking forward to the 20 or so coming.

Leftovers are the best part of hosting and I usually have enough deserts left over to have something different each day for a week along with all the turkey and dressing.

I'm sure we will again starting next year, but this year only hosting Christmas is actually kind of sounding pretty darn good.
madman Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Guests. Go to the in-laws and have our family gathering. It's our family tradition and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Getslow Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Guest. Though my parents are hosting for the first time ever this year. My grandfather is turning 90 and it's finally just to much for him and my 86-year-old grandmother to host it. They hung on for a long time. But my folks are having dad's side of the family over to the house for that reason. A perhaps interesting note: I'll turn 30 in 2014; my dad will turn 60 and his dad 90. Just funny how that works out. My mom's whole extended family rents out a neighborhood's clubhouse in Louisville. Lots of people on that side. Has made things much easier the last several years since moving it out of my mom's parents' cramped Highlands home.
hoops5 Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 We always host, never are guests. But this year the guests can't make the trip. So it will just be the 7 of us for dinner. Unless HB decides he needs a few more... Also told my daughter to bring home any dorm strays that can't get home for Thanksgiving.
