November 14, 201312 yr The stadium was built for The Olympics, not for the Braves. I should remember but don't. What was the stadium used for back in 96? Is this where they had the opening ceremonies?
November 14, 201312 yr I read the article, and it seems to me that a lot of the issues they have with Turner should have been addressed before it was built. A 20 year shelf life on a stadium seems too short to me. If local governments are being asked to fund (or help fund) such projects, it seems like this should be closer to a 50 year investment than 20 years. I have never been to Turner, but have heard from others that it was nice. It's not like the Braves are playing in old Comisky, old Tiger Stadium, or Fenway. I can totally get the point the Braves management made about traffic though. Traffic near the stadium has to be a major headache that effects attendance. The team got a nice deal, and a nice site for a stadium. I certainly don't begrudge them that. I just hope they aren't creating a trend of 20 year shelf life for stadiums.
November 14, 201312 yr Saw an article where the Mayor said they were jut going to tear down Turner field. Wondering if the financial impact of the Olympics makes this a throw away stadium?
November 15, 201312 yr The Olympic sponsors paid a ton for the Olympic Stadium, I believe 170 million of the 200 million cost. The city then paid over 200 million to have it converted. There is a good article in the "Atlantic" titled the other 284 days, it's pretty interesting. That part of town apparently isn't too appealing.
November 15, 201312 yr That part of town apparently isn't too appealing. Bingo. Comiskey Park, The Sequel.
November 15, 201312 yr This move actually makes too much sense. It would cost the Braves over 200 mil to upgrade. Also this moves the team a lot closer to the fan base Debatable that it would cost the Braves that much. It will cost the tax-payers that much.
November 17, 201312 yr I'm a fan of public transportation in America (I think it's really under-utilized, especially in certain areas) and think that it is kind of unfortunate that the MARTA will no longer run to the stadium.
