Finally figured how to reduce the size of my photo so it would fit within the file size limits. I put in a lot of hours the past several weeks to get to enjoy this one. Lots of fast food, and gas station breakfasts as well as time spent away from home.

I like the fact that you are willing to put the time in and be in the woods trying to kill a deer with a bow when the lead is flying...

 

Something about pulling into the check station and guys standing around judging deer and the one guy says" nice buck, not bad, how far was he?" And then you tell him 20 yds and he looks at you like your crazy and not a good sport or something, then you drop the bomb on them all and tell em you killed him with a bow...those looks become priceless. LOL

Dropped my gun last night, missed a Swamp Donkey this morning. (Well a 130 or so) When I checked it today, 6 inches left, 6 inches low. :( :ohbrother: :banghead: :arghh: :cry: :grumpy:

Bummer for you missing that deer.

Had an interesting season. Both my sons killed their first deer, and one of them took 2, a doe and a 6 pointer. I never squeezed the trigger but had the best season of my life. I never thought that was possible when I used to hunt by myself.

 

Let me ask a "what would you do" question.

 

I hunted mainly on a small private farm of about 50 acres with restricted access. There are several decent 10 and 8 pointers using the farm and a couple of bruisers. My next to last day to hunt, I was going to take a doe for the owner and had a small group of 5 does walk right past me and start to feed. There was a 4 pointer about 75 yards away at the time and I was about to shoot one of the does when the 4 pointer high-tailed it out of the area. That got my attention and I held up on shooting the doe. I noticed a larger buck about 125 yards away through the woods heading towards me. I could see antlers from that distance and figured it was definitely a shooter, especially on my next to last day. Well, when he finally got close enough to get a good look, he had one really nice antler with 4 long tines, but the antler on the other side was just a single stub about 4 inches long. My first thought was to cull the deer, but I couldn't tell if the antler was broken or just deformed. I put my crosshairs on him 4 or 5 times, but finally let him walk.

 

What would you do?

I'd blast em'. Then ponder.

I hunted the following morning but saw nothing. Even so, I don't regret not killing the bigger deer, but I wish I'd went ahead and popped that doe. I felt bad that I didn't kill anything for the landowner. I may go back during muzzle loader season just for that purpose.

If I saw him late bow season and had a shot I would cull him. But I'm just not wasting my one buck tag on him in early gun season. Now, another idea would be to offer a hunt to a friend for that specific deer.

In hindsight I wish I had shot the doe but the way it played out, I couldn't. When I had the chance to shoot the doe, I saw what I thought was a good buck 125 yards away. By the time he got close enough to see him for what he was, the does were gone.
