Opening Weekend for Modern Gun Deer Season

Featured Replies

How did all you deer hunters out there do? Weather did not help. Wind was bad both days where I went. Saw a few doe, but let me pass waiting for the big one out there.

Passed on a half a dozen does, shot and missed a nice buck. Getting too old for iron sights at dusk. With a scope he would have been mine. I took my 45/70 since I thought there may be some thicker brush still. Next weekend I'll go with the 30-06 or the 270. Both have scopes and that buck will be mine.

My nephew the "Cowboy" killed this nice Buck on our family farm yesterday in Southern Campbell Co. 11 Pointer...

Passed on a nice looking young 8 Saturday morning. Saw a few does, and lots of coyotes. All in all it was a pretty slow opening weekend.

Congrats on the 11 point. I couldn't hunt but two friends harvested a nice 9 pt. in Bracken, and a nicer 8 pt. in Boone County yesterday. It's 58 now and the weather is calling for snow tonight :jump:.

Happy hunting this week, Thursday morning, wind permitting, may be a god one.

I let a 120 class 8 walk. Should have whacked a coyote. Then an old man and his two grand kids strolled through the property like they owned it. Thought seriously about letting the .300mag wail just to see them jump outta their skins.:irked:

Another pic of my son Cowboy with his opening weekend Buck.

Story goes according to him...two does walk into a 400 lb corn pile 135 yds from tree stand, buck walks in to feed with them and he shoots the buck and drops him in the middle of the corn pile. He texts me to come to his stand, I arrive in the truck, we talk, we walk to the feeder and the two does are still standing there eating and with the buck dead on top of the pile.

Got to share the aftermath with him and with my good buddy and long time hunting partner FamilyTradition (pics compliments of FT):thumb:

Nice buck!!!!!!!

I have only seen 3 does. Railroad tracks separate the farm I hunt from another. The deer bed on the other farm and come to the soybeans where I'm hunting. It has sounded like Ft. Knox across the tracks all weekend.

Very nice, looks like it has good mass.

I let a similar sized 8 go Saturday morning. Did not see him long enough to say definite size but he was max 120.

I hope, just like you I'm sure, that passing on them allows them another yr.

Absolutely. I'm really trying to hold out for a 140 or better. If that means I leave a tag in my pocket so be it.

I wont have it officially scored but I will do my own fudging.

Iam thinking he is maybe 125 to 130:thumb:

This is a typical deer that presents itself almost every yr if not every other yr. My track record on this farm is every other yr and sometimes 3 yrs before I take a buck.

Living in Ft Thomas has a tendency to spoil a hunter when a 140 class buck is a regular sighting with some 160 to 180 inch bucks in the area. I sometimes sit in my treestand on the farm freezing my butt off thinking "why in the world would I be here when I can kill a monster at the house" and then of course nothing is worst than having my wife tell me "you should have been here tonite, the big 10 pt was at the feeder for an hr":thumb:

Yep, 3 years running for me. I had one on camera that would scare you, haven't shot one since after making a solemn vow not to unless it was in that class. So, it's doe-town for me until I get excited.
