I don't think comparing numerology to a religious belief is a strong argument here.

 

Because you are of the Christian faith, therefore you are elevating it above all others in terms of importance. Therein lies the problem when we live in a country where freedom of religion is one of the planks. Who's to say my hypothetical numerologist isn't as devout in their faith as someone who practices one of the 2,000-dozen different stripes of Christianity?

I said that Protestant Christians go out of their way to look for reasons to complain that they're being put upon or discriminated against, when the fact is the cards have been stacked in their favor for the entirety of our country's existence. That's why I included the part in there about the mantra, which you did not bold.

The real question I have for this thread is why is UKMustang coming off so angry and passionate about a teenage girls religious belief surronding a number. Is this issue really that big of deal. At the end of the day I will forget this topic soon as I quit reading it. My only point was while I may not hold the same belief as the girl if I were a race offical I probably would of nipped the issue from the start and gave the girl a different number.

My whole point is that if the belief doesn't affect me then I don't see the big deal. Did giving the girl a different number affect another person in a negative way? Freedom of religion is a big deal regardless of how silly the belief is in this country. As long as said belief does not infringe on other peoples right we of all faith should support the freedom regardless of the level of silly.

And I don't disagree, I said from the beginning she's well within her right to stand up for her beliefs. That doesn't mean I can't think her particular belief that a meaningless number will somehow diminish her relationship with God is ridiculous.

Jim serious question. Why do you tie every indivdual who believes in freedom of religion into some sort of bible thumping snaking charming nut. I'm not some right wing evangical , I just believe in the constitution. You can't believe in seperation of church and state and then ignore the rest of the right/law that says everyone has the right to practice their religion as long as they don't infringe on other peoples rights. I don't care if you are a snake charmer, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or Hindu. You could replace any person of any faith with this article my response would of been the exact same.

I'm Catholic so I wouldn't call it without meaning. In the Catholic faith we believe 666 has that meaning. But I'm with you in that I don't think it's some sort of cursed number that will bring harm. I think has more to do with symbolism.
