What I've learned tonight:

With their win over Blackman, Bowling Green is the undisputed #1 team in the state. IF that weren't enough, which I feel it is, then you still have Highland's narrow win in a shootout with Warren Central, Trinity's drubbing at the hands of Moeller, and Male's 6-0 win over CAL.

 

The Johnson Central-Belfry tilt shows the gap between the two schools, and the rankings next week will probably be adjusted some to reflect that. Maybe Johnson Central was a little underrated and Belfry was a tad overrated or a little of both.

 

CAL and DeSales are undoubtedly the most underrated teams in this week's polls.

 

With all the shake-ups, this is probably going to go down as one of the more wide-open years for State Championships in Kentucky as a whole. Lots of the classes appear to be up for grabs.

I wouldn't say no love. I've agreed with you and PP92 in saying I thought they were underrated, even more so when you told me about some of their losses in the earlier games coming while key players were injured.

 

I have love for the Tigers. I just didn't learn anything from them tonight that surprised me like the other games I mentioned above. That probably says more about what I thought of them going in than what they proved to others tonight though.

Oh yea… and I have to give you alotta credit for calling the Manual win over Male (again).

 

People should make no mistake about it, at least as far as I'm concerned, St. Xavier is a team I want NO part of in the playoffs if I'm a fan of any other 6A team.

 

On the whole, they are probably the most underrated and most dangerous team out there.

With the coaching changes, I think that a "new season" might have begun. I've not seen a whole game of theirs personally since the Bowling Green game, but anytime something like that happens to shake your team up, I'd think it's a new beginning.

 

If you ask me, I think most would be guessing if they said they knew just how good this team was going to end up playing in a few weeks.

 

IF the passing game is clicking with the way they can pound the rock behind their backs and line, they are going to be outright DANGEROUS. I'm still a huge fan of Walker and think the outcome of the Trinity game COULD have been different if they had him. I don't think that's a huge surprise to many though.

Since last weeks rankings went out so late, let's try to keep the updates in this thread.

 

Who does everyone have as their top 25 this week? Post #49 details what I would consider the biggest shake-ups in the rankings.

Going to throw out my unofficial (at least for the moment), Top 25 Regardless of Class. For the first time this year, I'm going to rank it in tiers. Here goes:

 

 

 

 

#1. Bowling Green:

Enough said. See the rest of my posts.

 

 

 

 

#2. Male:

Tough loss to a dangerous "super" district opponent Manual aside, they took down the two Catholic powers (i.e., Trinity and St. Xavier) in consecutive weeks before the let-down and have my respect as the #2 to Bowling Green (more on this later).

 

#3. St. Xavier:

WHAT IF? This is the story of St. Xavier's season. What if they just pounded Walker and Percell in the Bowling Green game instead of trying to get fancy and pass? What if Walker hadn't went down before the Trinity game? What if Percell hadn't missed time as well? Well, here's a "what if" for everyone courtesy of me: "What if these Tigers just took longer than most to come into form and present as the most dangerous team in the playoffs in a one-and-done if they are playing at full strength?" If I'm in the 6A playoffs, I want no part of a healthy, hungry St. X team whose took their licks with injuries and coaching shuffles, but whose just now rounding into playoff for and have a game or two to perfect their art. SCARY.

 

#4. Trinity:

Last week's loss to the Mighty Moe aside, I'm more worried about posters whose opinions I trust saying things like:

"This team needs to figure out who they are before the playoffs start, if not then an early exit might be a blessing"…

"This game was not as close ss the score indicated. I was concerned if the Rocks would score"…

"I take back what I said in another thread. Trinity has been over ranked all year. Not even close to the top team in the state"…

"This was an out right EMBARRASSMENT. Out played and out coached, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Could be a very early exit from the playoffs, which may be a blessing. Good Lord"…

This is just getting off the first page of comments in the Moeller game and seems to me to be indicative of BIG problems for one of the state's premire programs. In so many ways, this seems like UK's NIT season last year.

 

#5. Manual:

Hung tough with all of the teams in their district. No one embarrassed them. They beat Male and played Trinity and X close. They have a nice passing attack and a great playmaker in QB Michael Nero. Will it be enough to take State? Only if the cards fall right. Will it be enough to ruin some team's seasons? Easily.

 

#6. Scott County:

The forgotten team in the Eastern section of the 6A bracket, they gave Trinity their best shot in the semis last year, but it wasn't enough. This year, the Cards could be poised to land that knockout blow on a weakened Louisville contender. Don't underestimate how hungry this team has to be, and the amount of people NOT talking about them is likely only adding fuel to the fire. They have athletes and a game breaker in wideout Scott Daniel. Possibly more important to their chances, they have an easier path to the finals than any of the West schools.

 

#7. Simon Kenton:

I think I'm about to start a war. Nonetheless, here goes. Highlands is banged up and only beat a 5-5 (yes, that's .500 ball for you non-mathmeticians) Warren Central squad by 2 points, AT HOME. Simon Kenton has passed them because they've taken care of business (i.e., their undefeated season which included tilts with Collins, a drubbing of defending 2A champion Newport Central Catholic, a win over an {at least in my humble opinion} underrated Campbell County squad, and a hard fought win over a tough Dixie Heights team. If Scott County doesn't come out of that side of the bracket, I'm predicting that the Pioneers will. There, I said it.

 

#8. Fort Thomas Highlands:

Oh how the mighty have fallen. No matter how you paint or spin it, here's the brutal fact. Highlands was at home and let a 5-5 Warren Central team come back on them and only won by 2. They gave up 69 points to that Dragons team. They also gave up what some are considering a NFHS record number of yards. Again, this is solely one plebeian's opinion, but this could be the year that the hunters see the hunted & the sharks are smelling blood in the water. Highlands is good… Wait, no, they aren't good, they're great. But it looks like this may be the year where a Covington Catholic or Johnson Central turns the tables and upsets the Bluebirds. If you are going to shoot at the King, you better be sure you kill him. Well, Johnson Central and Covington Catholic are swinging their slingshots and have their sights set on Goliath, but they at least appear to have a puncher's chance. One week ago, it would have been "next question"… this week, well, I'm not convinced, YET.

 

 

 

 

#9. Johnson Central:

War Eagle isn't just a cry to rally around Cam Newton and his $200K scholarship budget. Following a convincing win over Belfry, I've moved Johnson Central up. Whether or not they are the team who beats Highlands remains to be seen. We know they have a solid running game and a kicker with plenty of leg, but do they have what it takes to pull the sword from the stone? They have the offensive fire power, along with what I consider to be an underrated front line, and play the style of offense that could keep the offensive play count in Highlands' potent attack limited to a low number of snaps.

 

#10. McCracken County:

A first year school who looks to have improved every week and learned what's expected of them after their two early losses, this is a dark horse to come out of the top bracket in the 6A playoffs. A coaching staff whose been there before and a school with a new identity who doesn't know that they are supposed to roll over for the Louisville powers has potentially devastating effects, but the downside is there as well. Maybe one of the most unpredictable teams in the whole mess, they are playing at home and control their own destiny. "To the Victor goes the Spoils"… are the spoils of a treacherous 6A path enough to motivate the Mustangs to forge history for their new school?

 

#11. Boyle County:

Because PurplePride92 said so, and he's part of the BGP brain trust. Accidentally omitted them when doing this late last night. Always a tough out in 4A, and this year looks to be no different.

 

#12. Covington Catholic:

Ugly losses to Moeller and Highlands aside, it's been a great season, but even the Colonel Crazies might not provide enough chaos to propel their beloved past rival Highlands.

 

#13. Dixie Heights:

Have lost in close contests to those that were expected to prevail over them and haven't beaten anyone of note to prove otherwise, I'm even questioning why I have the Colonels ranked so highly.

 

#14. Central:

The Yellow Jackets will take on all comers, and have a great system in place. Tyrone Scroggins' squad is the favorite to go for FOUR consecutive state championships. Before Belfry's loss to Johnson Central last week, I'd have thought this streak was in more jeopardy than I do now, but the fact that Central is still the class of 3A football until proven otherwise still remains.

 

#15. Christian Academy of Louisville:

'CAL' folk-- get with the KHSAA and tell them you've arrived on the map. Whether you want to be called CAL, Christian Academy-Louisville (KHSAA website) or Christian Academy of Louisville, whatever it is, you all pick. You are on the map after a season whose only blemish was a 6-0 road loss to Louisville Male, who many were arguing was the #1 team in the state regardless of class earlier in that week. You won a home slugfest with DeSales and have an easier playoff road than they do. Sit back and enjoy the ride while you are cheering on your squad. You have a chance to leave a huge footprint on the KHSAA landscape if you play well. Former Louisville Cardinal standout Stefan LeFors guides your promising program, and you may forge a dynasty for years to come considering your enrollment. #NewBeginningsInThe21stCENTURY

 

#16. DeSales:

Sorry Colts, you lost a road contest to CAL and now have a really tough road to get back, but if anyone can do it, it's you. You, CAL, and a few more squads have brought an infusion to 2A football by showing you can hang regardless of the opponent. If you want to be remembered though, the path of least resistance is one you cannot take. Road games with Glasgow, CAL, and (finally) Caldwell County in Princeton await you, in consecutive weeks no less. "To the victor goes the spoils", indeed. Win your district and you are a far more dangerous threat to win 2A, but as things stand, you are playing against a stacked deck.

 

#17. Campbell County:

A team that would be higher but for their loss to Dixie Heights. Too bad they play in 6A. Maybe an upset is possible, but I'll be surprised if they go past playing one game above their heads.

 

 

 

 

#18. Butler:

6A squad with two losses: to Male and Manual, and by a combined 25 points. Could send someone home early, but nothing to say that they are a contender in the brutal 6A draw.

 

#19. John Hardin:

If I were to write a letter to the football program, this would be it: Dear John Hardin, Matt Elam can stuff the run and is loaded with potential. Maybe that's exactly how your team is as well, but as it stands, you've narrowly lost to Highlands and DeSales. At the time, the DeSales loss looked worse than it turned out to be. You have the Giant, but if you want to prove everyone wrong, play the role of Giant Killer and knock off Bowling Green and I'll gladly eat crow. Neither of your losses are bad, but none of your wins stand out either.

 

 

 

 

#20. Caldwell County:

Undefeated, you are. However, you haven't played many close games and I wonder if not knowing how to win the close one against a quality opponent when it comes gut-check time will impede your progress. 4**** QB Elijah Sindelar looks to be a stud, but I wonder what else you have to go with him and whether you are as good as CAL and DeSales until you prove otherwise?

 

#21. Collins:

A pair of WKU commits, RB DeAndre Farris and MLB Masai Whyte anchor your units on each side of the ball. That Petrino guy seems to know a thing or two about football. Oh yea, you have QB Lawson Page who, according to Scout has some interest from Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Morehead State, Murray State, Toledo, Western Kentucky, Arizona, Kentucky, Texas A&M too. Maybe I'm underrating you? Sorry if so, but you have the chance to prove me wrong. I like your odds.

 

#22. Henderson County:

If you weren't in such a weak bracket, I'd think less of your losses to Covington Catholic and McCracken County. But alas, you aren't, so it is what it is. I'll give you a puncher's chance.

 

#23. Meade County:

Close loss to John Hardin and a drubbing to Male gives them a puncher's chance in the weaker bracket. Nothing more, nothing less.

 

#24. Central Hardin:

Good team with only one loss, which came to Meade County. They won't beat themselves, and seem to be well-coached, but they'll have to play above their heads if they expect to survive and advance in the later rounds.

 

#25. Belfry:

With sand-bagging fans who won't give us a clue on how great this team can be because of their modesty (take a lesson in coach-speak BGP posters), this team is the most likely to unseat Central from their throne and a four-peat, but I wonder if they are a year away based on the talent of their star players. Nonetheless, IF they meet Central, trust me, they'll be ready and will give the Yellow Jackets more they want and then some. Whoever plans on winning that one better be ready for a nasty dogfight because nothing will come easy.

 

#26. Bryan Station:

Probably the most dangerous of the Lexington area schools. With athleticism all over the field and the ability to break the big one to score in a hurry with their speed and ability to get to the edge, I'll go out on a limb and give them the nod as the best team in the area despite some of their losses.

 

 

 

 

Honorable Mention:

Ballard, Henry Clay, PRP, Wayne County, Conner, Warren Central, Madison Southern, Dunbar, Tates Creek, Franklin County, Lafayette

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. Honestly, putting SK ahead of Highlands borders on comical. No, actually it doesn't just border on it.

 

Way too much being put into a late season game after they rolled up a 41-7 lead.

Yo, Joker......uh.....you completely left out the current #2 team in the BGP 4A Rankings....uhhhhh one of the undefeated "Terrific Ten", home field advantage through the state final, uhhh......held 5-5 Warren Central to 16 points......uhhhhh we call them the undefeated Boyle County Rebels of TitleTown, Ky, USA.
