Heck, I will even volunteer my time to help find a good coach. I'll say it again...Owsley County needs STABILITY!! Too many coaches in the past few years. The players are having to adjust to a new coach every year!

If Owsley keeps Coach Smith they will have stability.

True, old owl. The point I was making earlier was if he leaves, that Owsley shold look for someone that will stay awhile. If it is Mr. Smith, I certainly see no problem with that.

I fear that the damage has already been done. From what I hear, both the middle school and JV teams struggled at Owsley this season. With the graduation of Robert Smith and the uncertainty surrounding Daniel Neeley, next year could be a very long year for the Owls. If Coach Smith does not return, the new coach will have a very difficult task in front of them. I feel that it will be difficult to find someone that has a proven track record to want to be put in that position. If Owsley settles on a young coach without experience, they will have to be careful that they find the right person who will work to rebuild the once proud program, and will be willing to perservere through the obstacles that will inevitably be in their way.--- All this being said, I do not see Owsley Co. putting up the money to create a position in order to bring in some one to be basketball coach. If Coach Smith does leave, they will probably hire from within.

I don't think Wolfe's coach is in ant hotseat, He is a bball legend there and his Dad is a coaching legend. Also wait to see if any transfers come in this summer and if any other coaching legends(fraley) stop by to help work out some kinks

Amazing how this program has lived off transfers as of late. If you talk to some Wolf faithful that is the rub and why I rated Wolfe as a hotseat. If you are speaking of Dave Fraley I thought he resigned over at Pulaski for health reasons. I would love to see Dave back in the 14 th if his health is up to it.

I know the defense would improve.

Coach Hall at Breathitt in my opinion has the most pressure. He has a team of kids that if I recall won the middle school state championship and he is just off a successful season from a year ago. The pressure is on Coach Hall to succeed.

It's different in middle school when you have a 6'5 boy it's somthing special but in high school you see them on almost all teams.

Who is within? The owls assistant coach ? Smith played for the Owls in the mid 90's I believe. :confused:

2. Coldiron at Powell

I think these are the only two underacheivers in the region that don't have the clout or backing to stay put. I think Hall at Breathitt would come a distant third. I think he has another year before the heat really goes up. Powell has the third largest enrollment in the 14th. they are supposed to compete year end and year out. It just isn't happening, they can't seem to get any numbers out to play ( less than 15 in entire program 9-12) and community support and attendance is at all time lows.

 

I agree with KF. However I have thought this the past 2-3 years about Coldiron. Begininng to wonder if Powell is going to keep him forever??

The thing that bothers me is the fact that some schools won't actively recruit new coaches into the schools. I would like to see Owsley Co stop trying to "make it with what they have", and put some effort in finding a good coach. There are a lot of young coaches/teachers who are looking for employment. Don't make a teacher coach if they don't want to. I'm afraid that happens from time to time.

 

Didnt they do this once with Hicks?? I dont think he was inhouse but might have been?? If he wasnt this might make them wonder about finding a coach since he apparently wasnt suited for booneville.

Finding a good young coach is a really tough challenge. Lee got so lucky when we had an opening and Danny wright applied to be an assitant. The board offered him the head coaching job and he said he would try it. Boy I for one am glad he took the challenge. He had many trials and many sleepless nights but he stuck it out and now it feels so good so see him smiling. HARD WORKS PAYS OFF! I feel safe in saying there is no coach in our region who outworks Coach Wright. I know his parents and I know why he never gave up(I know I probably would of). He is a quality man and Coach. Lee won the lottery with Danny.

He already had the Owls' summer camp schedule made out and everything, and was to be back at Owsley for the 2003 season, when he got news from Greenup County that he had been hired to coach the Musketeers.

I agree with you! If I had anything to do with the hiring, i would be trying to get him to come to Owsley County. If you want a good coach, go get one. Coach Wright is one!

The problem is that most small schools, out of necessity have to hire a coach that can do something else, like teach math. I know that you can hire "lay" coaches, but doesn't a teacher have to be around someplace?

So Owsley was in support of Hicks?? I did not get that impression while he was the coach but thanks for clearing that up!!

I dont see Coach Creech leaving Wolfe County. He played there and his dad was a very successful coach there. He isnt going anywhere.

 

You said it right. Creech will :walk: when he is ready. He will not be pressured by anyone at Wolfe Co. There is ties there that will not be broken.
