The area where Dalton has improved is his intermediate range passes. His touch on those has been outstanding. The couple of passes to Gresham over the linbacker were on the money. His back shoulder throws also were very good. His TD pass to Eifert was away from the defender and he actually threw him to open space. Those are outstanding. Even if he isn't hitting the deep ball, it is keeping defenses honest. Stafford missed a bunch of deep throws, also. His were overthrown, though.

 

Good point about Stafford. The thing with Dalton is at least they have a chance to still make a play or get a flag on an underthrow. Stafford missing long actually was much worse results wise.

I think some times it may depend on what defenses are being played. If you've got a safety back watching the play develop, or going against a zone where the guys can see the ball coming...then it's probably better to overthrow it (to the outside) where if your guy doesn't get it, nobody does. However if you're dealing with straight man to man and a guy's running beside you, then I agree...by not overthrowing it, not only do you allow your player to make the catch, but you're also looking at the possibility of pass interference by the defender, who's not able to see it coming and make the adjustments.

 

I did find it funny though, at the number of comments about passes that were actually completed by Dalton, compared to those that were incomplete (because they were overthrown) by Stafford.

They absolutely can win big with him. Just don't think you can call his performance yesterday or him elite in anyway. As long as he plays within himself he can have great performances.

 

I didn't get to see any of the game, so I can't comment on specific plays or anything of that nature, but I'll say this. You're harping on a couple of missed throws. Every single QB, even the elite ones, have at least a couple misses every game. The great Peyton Manning throws a deep ball that may be worse than Dalton's. Brady missed yesterday, Rodgers misses multiple times a game, same for Brees.

 

If a QB completing over 70% of his passes, throwing for just under 400 yards with 3 TDs and no turnovers isn't an elite performance, then there is no such thing.

What kind of defense does Buffalo run? The only reason I ask, is if they run a 4/3. Then I do see a little bit of a trend on what defenses Dalton does well against and what defenses he does not. At least through the years it has seemed that Dalton struggles big time against 3/4 defenses, but does much better against a 4/3.

I wouldn't say he is the weak spot, but the teams success does depend on him. This team does have all the pieces to make a run, and I have said all off season and still do. It all comes down to the play of Dalton. When Dalton plays good, then this team can do something special. However he has had a good run of games in the past against good defenses. The main thing for him to do, is to prove that he can sustain in big games and against better defenses. It will come down to him on how successful this team is.
