Watching the Carolina/Tennessee game, and yet another player has been ejected due to targeting. IMO, it was clear he wasn't trying to hurt the guy, it was just poor form. There was helmet to helmet contact, so the ruling was upheld and the player was ejected.

 

By definition, the hit was targeting. Fine, whatever. The rules being put on defensive players have gone far beyond my taste a long time ago, but that is a battle us "old fashioned" football guys aren't going to win. My biggest problem now has become the ejections. Do we REALLY think it's necessary to eject these players after ONE hit? I just can't justify it. If you call targeting on a player once, penalize them with the 15 yards, no ejection. If they do it again, then you can eject them. This is a "shoot first, ask questions later" approach, IMO. It's not fair to the defensive players.

I watched that play and just seen it again in the Fla./ Mizzu game. Terrible that kids are being ejected over playing hard.

 

Football is a violent sport and yes injuries occur. Yes they should try to prevent all they can. But this rule is killing the game.

Call the penalty, fine, you'll get no argument from me. Heck, make it the equivalent of a yellow card in soccer. You get one, it's a penalty, you get another in the game it's an ejection. I'm fine with that even. I'm flipping back and forth between USC/Tennessee and Mizzo/UF and it happens on the first possession in each game. Just ridiculous.

I'm not a fan of this at all though. We will get to the point that guys start shooting low and taking out the legs because they are worried about the targeting rule. This is going to lead to a lot more knee injuries. I think that is exactly what happened a couple weeks ago in the UGA v Tenn game. RB caught it out of the backfield and the defender was in great position to make a tackle but he dove at the guys legs and hurt the UGA player's knee.

This is the way I see it as well. One, you're warned, two, you're gone.

He led with shoulder and forearm and gave up at least 50 + pounds to the guy. Clearly the contact is initiated under this Hawkeyes players armpit and chest level. One, this "launch" concept must be better defined. So if you keep your feet and attempt to run thru the player it isn't a launch?

 

Two, do we tell players to stop and waive a flag informing the ball carrier we're about to tackle you. Here's a thought, throw the flag on the QB who leads their receiver into imminent threat because he misread the defense. See how silly this is becoming?

 

So if he runs through the player at the knees it's not a launch. But resulting damage is OK at the knee.

 

It's football in retrospect and with it comes risks. I envision my grandsons and I watching the 2025 Super Bowl being won by a flag being pulled off someones hip before they cross the end zone.
