Police Officers Wearing Lapel Devices That Record Them While On Duty

Featured Replies

That's what's basically happening. Look at some of the things being built by Boston Dynamics right now.

Robotic "insects" and "hummingbirds" that can be used as surveillance drones, a "wildcat" that can run up to 16 miles per hour for "search and rescue" missions.

My God, didn't any of them see "The Terminator"? We are doomed.

Here's a link.

Boston Dynamics: Atlas shows balance; WildCat sprints untethered (w/ Video)

The DARPA is a federal defense group.

I know you probably meant the Robocop in jest, but as you can see with the "animals" and the Atlas, it's actually something that's in the development phases.

Also, I do think there are some very good things that these could be used for (consider a bomb threat, going into a dangerous situation to rescue hostages, etc.).

Wow. That's pretty incredible.

Anyone seen West World? That movie keeps flashing in my head now. (I know, I sound like a movie junkie...)

Still not a fan of this practice in any way, shape of form. Of course there are bad cops just like there are good and bad in every job, but I don't like the idea of strapping a camera on an officer and making him prove every day whether his actions are justified or not. The stress alone would make me quit; being second guessed every moment of your shift. Should I do this, say that? How will it be interpreted?

Watch this video several times before reading the description. Video being filmed by a second officer appears to show the suspect laying down a rifle as ordered by police and then as he's doing it he gets shot by another officer...video doesn't tell the whole story in this case.

You have any background info on this? It looks fake.

That video had been floating around the internet for at least 4 years. It is not a real occurrence but instead a dramatization. The police don't release unedited snuff videos...but I do get the point of the video.

No I don't have anything other than what was posted with the video. Could be dramatization as Joe said but there are several videos like this that have been out for years that have been released and show someone getting shot.

I don't know anything about law school (except I like beating up on lawyers) but your paper sounds too broad if you are covering all those issues and trying to incorporate the lapel camera issue.

I guess I would have to know more about the writing guidelines?

Yea... definitely narrowing it down. The title of the class is cyber crime and cyber security. I think I'm going to go with some stuff on data mining, companies who sell user's data, and the scope/standards for warrants/probable cause, etc.

Cool.

You could also think about how a company like Facebook could unknowingly contribute to the problem by selling off all the information on everyone's Facebook account. Even the information we all think has been deleted.

For sure. That and dating websites have access to things people don't necessarily want broadcast, and they do sell it.
