For his class, I'm not sure. I think Shane Hall is a better college prospect because of his size but him taking the summer off doesn't give us much to go off of. The kid gets buckets though, regardless, and that's why he had the offers he did. Love his mid range game, but I'm with GT that his biggest question marks are on defense because of his size.

Congrats to the kid anytime you get a scholarship it's a good

thing regardless of who you can or can't guard.

I love watching Shane Hall play, but he lacks a consistent jumper and can't put it on the deck. But he can elevate better than anyone in his class IMO.

Agreed. Kelan Martin is much more of an all around player than Hall, and has a good amount of upside. Everyone thinks his height is a factor, but he has a lot of mass, and plays with really good position when it comes to rebounding.

Who exactly does he guard in the Big East? He lacks the lateral quickness to guard high major 3s and will struggle to guard most 4s because of his lack of size. Not exactly the makings of a lock down defender...

 

Even though he's never going to be the player with the most amazing lateral quickness, I don't think it stops him from throwing his weight around. I was thinking maybe a Ben Wallace-type banger who just throws his body around inside. Chane Behanan isn’t really the biggest guy in the world either, though I’ll readily say he’s waaay more explosive than Martin.

 

Obviously, those types of undersized bangers are best-case scenarios, but I could see him doing a good job on most fours (even stretch fours). I would think it would take him some time in the strength and conditioning program to improve his quickness and bulk so he's able to do that, but maybe a guy who defends the 3 by bodying up and using fouls (lots of the 3’s are guys who’d be really good 2’s if they had the jump shot to play the position). He could also get a look at guarding the 4 if he can staying low, use his lower body, strength, etc.

 

Just a thought really, but I will say that the more I think about it, the harder it is to defend that position though. Initially (and still to some degree), I just think Butler sees something in him past offense because he isn’t their typical offensive player. Maybe the new staff is going in a different direction and/or I'm just dead wrong though.

Chane is a liability on D so I wouldn't make that leap when calling someone a potential lock down defender. I think Martin can be a solid defender, but I see no way he is counted on to shut down the opponents best scoring threat. Just not a role he has the ability to fill...

Yea... the more I think about it and the more evaluations I read, the more off-base I realize my defensive aspirations for him probably were.
