Tennessee HS takes kids to a Mosque

Featured Replies

Muslims arent complaining about going to Christian Churches for field trips because there arent any field trips to christian churches, that is not allowed, dont want to push religion on anyone.

Is that what you were asking or was you meaning I am complaining all the time

Wait, I never said anything about you at all. I'm with you on this one. I don't think you can exclude Christianity in schools, then take kids on field trips to Muslim sites. I wouldn't have signed the permission slip but that's my personal opinion so...

Right, and every time Mtn Ref and others come on here and say they shouldn't.

Not true, but hahahahaha ayway. I dont think you should make a Muslim go to a Christian Church on a school field trip, they may be converted and be labeled an infidel and killed.

Sorry, I didnt understand the quote. But Christianity is excluded all the time, especially around Christmas.

It is true. You got mad when they stopped saying a prayer over the loud-speakers before a football game. You didn't see anything wrong with that. Said those who were complaining should just observe a moment of silence. But now that it's Christians complaining, you're on-board.

HA HA HA, Im complaining due to the double standard. School can take kids to a Mosque, but not go watch Charlie Brown Christmas at a Church.

Since whn should one atheist stop 500 from saying a prayer over a loudspeaker, what makes his rights more important than the others.

But is there really a double standard? Someone complained about the praying, and only after that was it stopped. Here someone complained, and now these field trips have been stopped.

Also, a trip to the Mosque, whether you like it or not, as part of a world religions unit is relevant to the material and learning. I do agree that trips should've been planned for all religions covered or none, and it appears that the situation has been taken care of.

Well regardless, they never made it to a Christian Church did they, shame for all the students that didnt get to go here.

It is a dlb standard, anything goes but Christianity.

They arrest a pastor on his way to burn a bunch of Korans, but let people in America burn the US FLAG. Oh but Freedom of Speech you say. Well same can be said for burning a Koran. But NO NO NO, cant do that, must be tolerant says the government, dont want to hurt Islam feelings.

But our military can burn the HOLY BIBLE so it wont make Muslims mad.

They burned the Bible.

In 2008 American troops confiscated, threw away, and burned God’s Word at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. The Bibles were written in the Pashto and Dari languages, and the Defense Department was concerned the books might somehow be used to convert AfghansRead more: The day the US military burned the Bible in Afghanistan | Fox News

So yes there is a double standard whether you want to believe it or not.

Religions get covered in schools all of the time. You can't study World History without studying the religions. I see nothing wrong with taking a field trip to the mosque and had people not complained then maybe all five religions would have been covered before they canceled the field trips. That is the right thing to do. Cover all of the religions. At some point we(Americans) have to quit crying everytime somebody does something out of our comfort zone. Like our kids would really be harmed by visiting a mosque. If anything they'll learn acceptance and tolerance of those different than us. At the end of the day isn't that what we should be teaching our kids anyways?

Refusing to sign your kids persmission slip to visit a mosque is no different than refusing to let your kids date a person of a different race IMO. The same lesson is being taught. They aren't good enough for you.

Not even close to the same.

As far as the field trips, I don't think the school should be taking field trips to any church/religion for the purpose of studying the religion.

Is it a schools job to expose students to any form of religion?

Depends. Some say schools should only teach the 3 R's (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic) and throw in history too. Some would say part of understanding history would include understanding society back in history and today. The history being made today tends to focus on the MiddleEast, an area where society and culture are interwoven with Islam similar to how Christianity (to a much lesser degree) is interwoven into American culture ie most of our holidays have to do with Christian worship (Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc.) even if many Americans look at them in only secular ways. Unfortunately, I would bet the majority of Americans only know about Islam from what they hear from the media particularily those the most critical of Islam.

I knew several Muslims from college, a few of my professors were Islamic, a former boss of mine was Islamic (I can already hear some people on here gasping) and due to my own curiosity (nerd I know) I read about Islam but I know most have not had anything other than media exposure. So, if this field trip is simply to expose the students to understand the religion of the area of the world that is dominating the history being made now, I am fine with it so long as the trip isn't to praise Islam and bash Christianity and American culture.

When I was in school we took a field trip to The Temple in the East End of Louisville Metro. In no way was the trip to show Judiasm as being better than Christianity. Instead, the Rabbi sort of did a compare and contrast of Judiasm and Christianity along with general information of Judiasm. I would hope the (I forget the name of Islamic religious leaders) at that Mosque would do something similar such as pointing out that Christianity, Judiasm and Islam all three look to Abraham as their first prophet and the "founder" of their faiths. Muslims look to Jesus as a Prophet and agree with Christianity's view of a virgin birth (they hold Jesus higher than Jews) and then go to pointing out differences. I think it could be a productive day if done correctly.

Muslims arent complaining about going to Christian Churches for field trips because there arent any field trips to christian churches, that is not allowed, dont want to push religion on anyone.

There are no field trips to Christianity because they are not allowed or because the are really not needed. If you move to a country where the majority of the people are of a particular faith, you will learn about that faith just by getting to know people of the country, you will see the faith indirectly from customs of the people in that country and so on.

If I were to move to India, my guess is in a year or two, I would know quite a bit about Hindu even if I never visited a single Hindu worship service.

Sorry, I didnt understand the quote. But Christianity is excluded all the time, especially around Christmas.

I think that is just due to Christianity being the majority so most people are already fimiliar with Christianity and it has enough influence in society and customs that it does not need protection. As a society, we tend to look out for the minority in both faith and race. Just look at the African American specific institutions, Black Universities, Black Caucuses in government, Black Organizations, I think there used to be a Miss Black America but since some recent Miss America's have been black, Miss Black America has sort of faded I think. Because African Americans are a minority, most people don't mind the Black specific organizations knowing full well White Universities or a Miss White America would bring about scandal. My guess is most American look at minority faiths the same way. Just a thought.

Not even close to the same.

I said IMO. We treat Muslims like a bad word in this country. Like they are less than nothing. As if they all have to suffer the consequences of the Muslim radicals of 9/11. To me it is the same.

I can tell you a certain school in Fort Thomas took a field trip to the big Mosque in Cincinnati last year. I don't remember hearing a big uproar. Now they weren't given the Koran and a worksheet but it was part of their history class project.

The way you worded it it is not the same. If you said not letting them go simply because they are Muslim then maybe I see your point. But to say just simply refusing to sign the permission slip makes it the same just isn't accurate. Maybe it is for some but there may be religious reasons for not allowing it. What if I didn't want my child exposed to any other religion? Or maybe I'm atheist and don't want my kids expose to any religion. Has nothing to do with me thinking I'm superior, it's about my beliefs and he beliefs I'm passing on to my kids.
