Tilghman left seeing Red

Mayfield held on to beat Paducah Tilghman 28-21 in the 100th meeting between the two schools.

Stuart Mills rushed 41 times for 183 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cardinals to their eighth straight win over the Blue Tornado dating back to 2005.

Mayfield leads the all-time series 46-44-10.

The schools have played every year since 1921.

Another week, another close Henderson County win

New Henderson County head coach Tony Lewis is happy with his team’s 3-0 start, but I’m sure he wishes there wasn’t as much late-game drama. The Colonels have won their three games by a total of 10 points.

However, Henderson is getting the job done on defense. The Colonels are giving up just 15.6 points a game. Last year, Henderson gave up 28.6 points in their first three games.

The Colonel defense will be put to the test Friday when another batch of Colonels – those from Covington Catholic – come to Henderson County.

Cat Fight

Trigg County held off Hopkinsville 41-35 in overtime to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.

Jayven Jones rushed for a career-high 283 yards and four touchdowns for Trigg County, who beat Hopkinsville for only the second time in 20 career meetings with the Tigers.

Zac Atkins had his second straight 100+ yard rushing game for Hopkinsville.

Saving the best for last

Speaking of Hopkinsville, the Tigers have scored 76 of their 100 points this year in the second half. They scored 28 points in the second half of their win over Greenwood and their loss to Trigg County, including three touchdowns in a five minute span against the Wildcats

Historic Win

McCracken County picked up the first win in school history with a 46-14 win over Dyer County, Tennessee. Sophomore quarterback Zyaire Hughes was 20-of-30 passing for 287 yards. The Mustangs will go for their first win over a Kentucky school a week from Friday when they host Bullitt Central.

A Different kind of streak

After losing 33 straight games, McLean County is streaking once again…but in the other direction.

A week after beating Breckinridge County 29-14, the Cougars traveled to Caverna and beat the Colonels 35-14. The go for three straight Friday against an improved Muhlenberg County squad.

City/County champions

Owensboro scored on their first three possessions and never looked back in drilling cross-town rival Owensboro Catholic 43-0. Quarterback Nick Locher and running back Shamari Morton each scored two touchdowns as the Red Devils snapped a two-game losing streak to the Aces.

Owensboro swept the three teams in Daviess County and won their 26th outright city/county championship since it began in 1971.

Quarterback Comparison

(Through Three Games)

Luke Guhy (Mayfield) – 43-of-65, 681 yards, 8 TDs, 2 INT, 11 rushes, (-15) yards

Elijah Sindelar (Caldwell County) – 41-of-67, 520 yards, 8 TDs, 2 INT, 12 rushes, 94 yards, 1 TD

Zyaire Hughes (McCracken County) – 60-of-98, 894 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, 40 rushes, 121 yards, 4 TDs

Games to Watch

Caldwell County (3-0) at Trigg County (2-1) – These border rivals have met every year since 1954, with Caldwell County holding the upper hand in the series. However, Trigg County has enjoyed recent success, winning four of five and eight of the last 11. Last year, Trigg County won a lightning-shortened game 37-36 in Princeton.

PREDICTION – Caldwell County 55 Trigg County 34

Christian County (1-2) at Fort Campbell (1-2) – Christian County appears to have the better defensive team, but Fort Campbell can strike quick at any time. The Colonels have won the last two meetings and should have enough to make it three wins in three seasons

PREDICTION – Christian County 28 Fort Campbell 20

Madisonville (1-1) at Hopkinsville (2-1) – Both teams suffered their first losses of the season last week. The series between the schools dates back to 1907, and waged an annual battle on Thanksgiving Day from 1921-57. In recent years, the series has been nasty and with Friday being a must-win for both teams, it should be another intense battle. Madisonville has won six in a row against the Tigers. Friday is the 107th meeting between the schools, with Hopkinsville leading the all-time series 63-40-3.

PREDICTION – Madisonville 26 Hopkinsville 24

Murray (1-2) at Mayfield (3-0) – Speaking of teams who do not like each other. These small town rivals have been going at each other for decades. The series went on hiatus in 2005 but they returned to each other’s schedule in 2011. Murray’s last win over Mayfield came in the 1997 playoffs.

PREDICTION – Mayfield 38 Murray 15

Paducah Tilghman (1-2) at Graves County (2-0) – This is another one of these measuring stick games for both teams. Tilghman is a field goal away from an 0-3 start. The Eagles were thought to be lacking in offense this year with the graduation of top running back Zach Katzman. But Graves County has scored 73 points in wins over Franklin-Simpson and Murray

PREDICTION – Graves County 15 Paducah Tighman 14

Last Week – 4-1 (missed Trigg County’s win over Hopkinsville)

Season – 12-3

Nice work, Scribe. I am trying to get a good read on O-Catholic. Is Owensboro that much better or O-Catholic down a little?

I would like to add Peyton Puckett from Graves County to your QB comparison.

30-44 610yds 5TDs Rushed for 1 TD 2INTs Through 2 games

Sindelar has yet to play a whole game yet.

Sindelar only played 1quarter and 4 1/2 minutes of the 2nd last Friday

Guhy has put up those numbers against it stronger. Competition

Antonio Andrews of Fort Campbell won Mr. Football and didn't play a full game until the playoffs if I remember correctly
