First off you make it sound as if no matter what kind of player you have you can coach them up no matter what their skill level is to start on Friday nights.

 

Secondly you act as if the players aren't being coached up. You couldn't be more wrong. Cooper has The Best line coach not only in the area but possibly in the state. Which is why Cooper the last 2 years going into the seasons had their biggest question mark being their line due to who they have lost the past 2 years, 3 including this year and all they've done the last 2 years is prove their line was amongst the best part of their team.

 

They can defiantly coach up their players.

 

It must be pretty nice to sit in Ft Thomas and think that all the schools in the area have the same talent level and numbers to choose from to play on Friday nights. I actually think what Cooper has done without all the perks that HHS has at their disposal has actually proven to have performed a much better coaching job than the Hoghlands team did last year. It's more difficult to get to a state championship game with limited resources than it is to have everything HHS had last year.

 

So do me a favor, don't talk about "coaching" up players when talking about other schools if you don't know the entire story.

 

Your kidding right? Cooper had an awesome senior class and that is why they made it as far as they did. Nothing more nothing less.. Let's see what Cooper does the next couple years to determine who has the best coaching..Cooper has enough kids to two platoon. The coaching staff needs to develop a system to allow themselves to do it. It is much easier to coach when you have 5 or 6 really good kids going both ways. Take a less talented kid and develop him, that is coaching...

None of which has anything to do with 2 platooning.. Facilities? Yeah they have a 12yr old turf field that is awful and weight room right out of the 1970's..Come on!!

How many times does it need to be posted that they are developing the program?????? They now have a feeder program for the middle school players which only on its third year is starting to build the program. It isn't something that just happens overnight.

 

Last years team had some great seniors but to say they were the only reason the team did what they did is a slap in the face to the SR's this year etc as well as the coaches etc. out of the skill players last year on offense the majority were JR's and out of the Starting secondary last yr half were JRs

 

This team is developing and growing its program. To say they aren't is simply ignorant IMO. For you since you apparently haven't read this before I will say it again, in 2-3 years you will see a huge step in the direction you talk about due to numbers but at the same time you need to realize that Boone Schools can only get the athletes that are assigned to them in district. There are 4 HS's who are splitting up the kids

 

You may think open enrollment has no influence on where kids go has no affect but ask any Boone County coach and they will disagree.

 

Now I ask you, did HHS play for state title in their 5th year of existence?

Maybe Raiderbird knows this, but how many out of district kids does Highlands have that are big contributors?? I don't know of any kids in my school's district that are at Highlands, and I've been around the youth program for quite a few years. If open enrollment, established feeder programs and facilities were the answer, Kenton County Schools should be killing everyone. Dixie and SK have had long term feeder programs and great facilities, and Scott's facilities are the best in the region.

 

I just don't buy into open enrollment as being a huge issue as to why schools don't (or can't succeed). Sure you might lose a kid or two, but often you gain a kid or two as well. And one or two players for the most part don't take a team from average to excellent. I think the biggest problem that other schools have is there is little cohesion from what is being taught at youth levels. So much emphasis is put on winning, that even with 30+ kids on a team, only 13-14 play. Too much blitzing, and feeding one kid the ball every play, doesn't develop skills that kids need to play. So many kids get ignored, and not taught, and get no playing time, the game becomes no fun and kids quit, and the one's that stay, don't develop. Smaller teams, mandatory playing time, and more focus on fundamentals will help prepare more kids to be able to play at the next level. A quality youth program (not just a youth program) seems to be the difference to Highlands.

And those areas have a much larger population than the area that Highlands draws from. And I don't know the answer, but would open enrollment make a huge difference in Boone county Schools?? How many more athletes do you think Cooper (or Boone, Ryle or Conner for that matter) get. Would it really be enough to make a difference?? Cooper has done a great job in it's short existence, and I know several of the coaches, and they really are very good. And they seem to be doing a good job at the youth level, so maybe in time they will turn into consistent winners.
