In Taylor Mill, the Scott Eagles football program isn’t something that is usually talked about. Last season the Eagles had their first non losing regular season in program history at 5-5 and with a lot of the main contributors back for the 2013 campaign, there is a lot of excitement surrounding Coach Dan Woolley’s team this year.

 

“ We had a great off season,” Said Coach Woolley. “ We had a really good off season getting stronger and then with spring ball we definetly got better with our linemen and got better with those guys.”

 

Offensively, the Eagles will return 9 starters led by 6’5 tackle Kam Crim, who already holds an Indiana State offer and is receiving interest from Murray State, as well as 6’5 tackle Corey Fitzwater who is receiving interest from both Western and Eastern Kentucky and Akron.

 

“I think with our team (this year) it starts with our offensive line,” Said Coach Woolley. “We’ve got a pretty big offensive line led by Kam Crim and Corey Fitzwater.”

 

Nathan Penick, Trey Davis, and junior Brenden Sebree will round out this veteran group on the line. Nick Wolf and Logan Herzog will see time at the tight end postions to block for what should be a very good set of skill guys.

 

In the backfield, the Eagles will return all of their starters, led by senior quarterback Ben Osborne and senior running backs Josh Castleman. Nick Brinkman, and Reed Spata.

 

“ Ben Osborne is one of the better running quarterbacks in the area, in my opinion,” Said Coach Woolley. “ Josh Castleman had around 1,300 yards (last year), and with Nick Brinkman and Reed Spata, they both bring a little bit different style to the game but are both guys who are shifty and very fast and can definetly hit a homerun on any play.”

 

Defensively, the Eagles will move to a 3-4 defense this season to fit their personnel a little better, as a lot of guys will go both ways in Kam Crim, Nathan Penick, and Trey Davis .

 

At linebacker, it will be three year starter Chris Roberts that should be counted on to lead the defense.

 

“Chris Roberts is going to be an outstanding linebacker,” Said Coach Woolley.

 

Ray Everett and Josh Castleman will hold down the secondary but it a young guy, Roberto London, that has made an impact over the summer and been impressive.

 

“ He’s (Roberto) been very impressive on both sides of the ball,” Said Coach Woolley. “He will be a sophomore and is one of young guys that’s definetly going to contribute for us on the varsity level as a sophomore.”

 

The Eagles schedule this year will consist of non district games against West Jessamine, who has one of the better running backs in the state, Holmes, Aiken (OH), Newport, Holy Cross, who is 2 years removed from a 2A state championship, and Mason County.

 

“ We open up with West Jessamine who has one of the top returning running backs in the state,” Said Coach Woolley. “ That’s a game that will help us prepare to stop the run which I find is the biggest key to being a good football team.”

“Holy Cross is a great rivalry game for us. They’ve got a great coaching staff with Coach Kozerski and a lot of these kids know eachother and grew up with eachother. We also play Aiken out of Ohio, which is a very fast and athletic team. Last game of the year we play at Mason Co, who has a lot of dangerous offensive weapons.”

 

With so much returning, Scott has the expectations of everyone else heading in to the 2013 season.

 

“ We want to try and go out and try to win a district championship, which has never been done at Scott,” Said Coach Woolley. “ Last year was our first non losing season in 23 years so one of the biggest goals is changing the culture here”

 

The biggest thing for the Eagles is simply playing in games and competing at a high level throughout so at the end they have a chance to win games that they haven’t been able to in the past. The season will kick off August 23rd at East Jessamine vs West Jessamine in the Visitnich.com bowl.

 

Players to watch:

 

Kam Crim (OL/DL)- The 6’5 senior returns to anchor what should be a pretty good offensive line. The big guy already has an offer from Indiana State and should be expected to receive even more interest with a good senior campaign.

 

Corey Fitzwater (OL)- The other 6’5 senior tackle on the line will give the Eagles even more protection for quarterback Ben Osborne to pick a defense apart both with his legs and arm. Expect Fitzwater to hold several D1 offers by season’s end.

 

Ben Osborne (QB)- Osborne is more of a running threat as he rushed for 827 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, but can also throw when needed as he passed for 367 yards last year. Osborne completed 52% of his passes last year.

 

Josh Castleman (RB)- Castleman returns after rushing for 1,291 yards and 14 touchdowns last year. Expect him to average over 100 ypg again this season as a senior. The two way starter was also third on the team in tackles last year.

 

Reed Spata (RB)- Spata had 657 rushing yards last year with 8 touchdowns. As a change of pace back, expect those numbers to go up this year and him to see more touches to show off his athleticism and speed.

 

Nick Brinkman (RB)- Brinkman is a shifty, fast runner that should see his role increase this year.

Andrew Hicks (DB)- Great cover corner

Never would count them out. They seem from their scrimmage result to have done well so far although losing both Smith brothers is hard.

Nice battle but it was varsity vs varsity when WV scored on a pass. The first half format was first half varsity and it was not till second half till the JV came in. WV made some mental mistakes ie..blown coverage that resulted in a Scott td but like you said it was also trying out different personal and schemes. Nice scrimmage I thought for both teams and both seemed chippy.

Just a heads up, Reed Spata will NOT be playing football this year.

In regards to DE Blake Gay, he is one of the most underrated players in NKY.

I thought somebody said Scott was the best team in Kenton County? They can't even beat a 2A team?

 

It's funny that you say that..... Did you not see the post about no official score? Scott was in control the whole time starters were in.

The little bit of time that Scott wasn't subbing, they pretty much did whatever they wanted running the ball. They also had a long touchdown called back. It is correct they didn't look good at times and Osborne has to throw the ball better in order for them to have success.

 

They will be better than 5-5. They have a tough district, but they should win at least 2 district games---Grant County and either Cooper or South Oldham (they could win both of these or lose both of these). I don't think they beat Conner. Holy Cross, Newport, Holmes, and Aiken should be wins. West Jessamine and Mason County are toss ups too, I think. 6-4 is a worst case scenario, 8-2 is a real possibility. They are not the best Kenton County team, which isn't an insult as SK and Dixie will both be pretty good this year.
