15th/16th Region possibly doing away with Districts.

Featured Replies

Starting with 2014-15, the KHSAA is looking at doing away with district tournaments for these regions because of 3-team districts.

Problem with this -

Some schools district titles still mean something.

Finances - you are looking at taking a $5-7k hit OUT of your boys/girls basketball budget.

Would everybody play in the region tournament...making it a mini-state tournament?

Don't think it would happen because of tradition. Also wouldn't be fair to the other 14 regions. Everyone must be the same format in my personal opinion.

Some schools would lose a lot of $$$

Yes. Play every team in the region 1 time, every team makes region tourney, seeded tourney.

You can't say the 15th region boys aren't willing to try something different.

I recently came across the 57-59th district tournaments in 2009...where there were only three districts and a convoluted system that provided the eight teams for the region. Anyone have any background as to "the why" of that one?

The 15th Region did do that, but it was also something of a test run by the KHSAA. I don't think anyone was happy with it. Basically it boiled down to the fact that the 15th Region had 15 teams, but due to geography re-districting was tough. The KHSAA wanted to move Sheldon Clark into one of the Pike County districts but no one really liked that. The 58th District had Piarist, the fifth team, who wasn't playing at the time. So long story short, the 59/60th District (all six Pike County schools) sent it's winner, runner-up, and third-place finisher to the region. The 57th District (five schools) did the same. Yes, there were third place games! The 58th District (Floyd County) sent their champion and runner-up. The plan was scapped the next season.

This may be a dumb question so please forgive me if it is but why would the basketball budgets take a hit without district play?

Yes. Play every team in the region 1 time, every team makes region tourney, seeded tourney.

That works better in the 15th and 16th Region that almost any other in the state because neither region has much variation in school size. Johnson Central, the largest 15th Region school, is only 4A in football, while the largest 16th Region schools - Ashland, Boyd, Greenup, Rowan - are all 4A, too. And while both regions have small schools (Phelps, Piarist, South Floyd/Elliott County, Menifee County, Rose Hill), the gap isn't prohibitive.

It would be impossible to implement a plan like this in regions like the 6th, 7th, 9th, and 11th. It would be difficult in most every other region, too. I personally don't like the plan and I'm not really in favor of the method to the region being different for some regions, but at the same time we allow seeding and drawing on a district-by-district basis so it would be hard to complain about consistency when there isn't much to begin with.

I think schools get a cut of the money from district tournaments. If there is no district tournament, but just a one-off tournament game between the 1 and 16 seeds, then you wouldn't expect much crowd or much money. Perhaps a redistribution of profits would be worked out to balance the loss, but I can't imagine a tournament like this would make much money, especially in the first couple of rounds.

Like I said in another thread. KHSAA, masters of minutia and micromanagement. Maybe someone should send them a memo that the 16th region has 16 teams, 4 per district.

And they are planning on managing middle schools too. My prediction: FUBAR.

Do you have a link for this or is it simply discussion? The 15th Region does have two three-team districts, but they also have two five-team districts so I would think a little moving around would solve the problem. The 16th doesn't have any three-team districts, unless a school like Rose Hill stops fielding a team.

16th Region

61st district: Menifee, Rowan, Fleming, Bath

62nd district: East Carter, West Carter, Morgan Co., Elliott Co.

63rd district: Russell, Raceland, Greenup, Lewis

64th district: Rose Hill, Fairview, Ashland, Boyd

Hope this is a typo, otherwise, who's running this thing over there?

As I said in an earlier post, the only thing I could possibly see happening would be a school like Rose Hill dropping basketball, and even that would seem to be a huge stretch.

As I've said many, many, many times before, as long as there are more than 256 schools playing basketball in Kentucky, then there should never be three-team districts and there should be no modifications to the tournament format. Really simple.

You actually get more games by doing just a regional tournament vs district plus regionals in the current format.

This is assuming all districts in a region have same # of teams.

If 3 teams per district then current format 2 district games, 7 regional games - all regional = 11 games

If 4 teams per district then current format 3 district games, 7 regional games - all regional = 15 games

If 5 teams per district then current format 4 district games, 7 regional games - all regional = 19 games (assuming all teams get in regional)

Doesn't mean there will be more money though.

Except that's not exactly what happened. The losing semi-finalists in the 57th were Sheldon Clark and Magoffin County...and neither got to the region. The losing semi-finalists in the 59th were Phelps and Pike County Central...and BOTH advanced to the region.

From an outsider's perspective it appeared Bugs Bunny was right, "Thew's something scwewy going on awound hew."
