Doesn't mean there will be more money though.

 

That's the sticking point. For instance, last year our team wasn't very good. In the district tournament, however, we played a big rival and both schools had large crowds. The game was competitive, although we lost.

 

Now if we had been seeded 13th (about right), we would have went on the road in the first round to someone like Southwestern. The game would have probably been competitive, but I'm guessing we would have lost. And there wouldn't have been 50 fans make the trip.

As I said in an earlier post, the only thing I could possibly see happening would be a school like Rose Hill dropping basketball, and even that would seem to be a huge stretch.

 

As I've said many, many, many times before, as long as there are more than 256 schools playing basketball in Kentucky, then there should never be three-team districts and there should be no modifications to the tournament format. Really simple.

 

Well, Rose Hill had 2 yr post season sanction, played ever since. My nephew is the head coach, and unless he didn't get the memo, they have a full schedule this fall/winter/spring.

Except that's not exactly what happened. The losing semi-finalists in the 57th were Sheldon Clark and Magoffin County...and neither got to the region. The losing semi-finalists in the 59th were Phelps and Pike County Central...and BOTH advanced to the region.

Good point. Phelps had beat Pike County Central for third place, guaranteeing them a spot in the region. Sheldon Clark had beat Magoffin for third place, but then fell to Pike County Central (Pike County fourth place) in the regional play-in game.

 

For what it's worth, if it's that complicated to describe and that complicated to remember, then it probably was a bad plan.

spindoc, I'm not saying they are closing. I'm just saying that a tiny Christian school during a poor economy might succumb. Those other schools, all county, aren't closing. And I'm almost certain Rose Hill won't be either!

This may be a dumb question so please forgive me if it is but why would the basketball budgets take a hit without district play?

Districts usually draw really big crowds, I know several people that might go to 1 game a year until postseason and then go to them all.

I'm not meaning to argue, only to point out that the KHSAA is incompetent if they are basing it on history. Only district tourneys RH missed were the ones they sanctioned them for. You'd think that would ring a bell.

You'd think it would be really simple. There is no reason for any district to have 3 teams in it.

Do you have a link for this or is it simply discussion? The 15th Region does have two three-team districts, but they also have two five-team districts so I would think a little moving around would solve the problem. The 16th doesn't have any three-team districts, unless a school like Rose Hill stops fielding a team.

The 15th/16th region schools had also met about alignment. There will be another meeting between the regions to discuss alternative that are drastically different than ever before. One potential alternative to be discussed is the elimination of district tournaments and placing everyone into the regional, as well as other possible alternatives. The geographic issues in the 15th/16th region are problematic as the schools are located in three basic geographic pods, but are not in four groupings that could easily be placed into districts.

As consolidations continue, the KHSAA will have to continue to re-align to accommodate districts including perhaps some alternative discussions that have not been needed before now.
