Some KY high school football coaches think there is too much practice but...

I agree with you, but as you know rules prohibit them from coming to their school to work out on their own during dead period...many can't afford a gym membership. Few kids are going to run around the park. Frankly, many kids are going to take that 2 week break and just stay inside doing nothing. My point is have the break, but for football, figure out a way for the break to be in June vs 2 weeks leading into the first practice. There are other states that have dead periods, they just don't have the same dead period for all sports.

I don't know this, but I think this will eventually work itself out because football will be pushed back to a later start date. Just speculation. I think the restrictions on football due to heat are making that the best option.

I like kids playing multiple sports and getting a break to be a kid as well. Some of that is tough to legislate/regulate and not sure I want anyone to do so. My preference would be good parental and coaching guidance and wisdom.

I hope you're right; I've always liked the "old school" tradition of playing the first game on Labor Day weekend. That would allow "acclimation periods" in early August rather than mid-July. Shorten the playoffs and finish the day after Thanksgiving, as far as I'm concerned.

As a lifelong player/coach/parent, though, I'm very glad to see this subject being examined/discussed rationally. In addition to winter weights, spring ball, summer conditioning and the regular season, lots of kids now feel compelled take on any number of camps, combines, 7-on-7 events, etc., and I see plenty of instances in which it's becoming counterproductive.

Heck, on July 11th, I actually witnessed a middle school team practicing in pads, but I'll surrender the soapbox. Clearly, something needs to be done at that level, too.

I know several across the state who are doing just this. Maybe minus the 7v7 tourney's on Saturday, but I don't see that doing one of those is any big deal. Truth be told, most coaches that I know who take their teams to the tourney's on Saturday's do so merely for the kids; because THEY want to go.

And in some cases the go,go,go mentality comes from the kids and parents because they want the exposure for themselves and encourage and in some cases force the hand of the coaches to do more simply to just keep up with the Jones's.

More kids and parents must be patient and trust their coaches and let them do their jobs. :thumb:

Another poster mentioned that if a kid or parent doesnt like the way a coach is handling their program then look elsewhere.

But in the end all the little extra things add up and before you know it somebody is either physically or mentally injured...

Has then always been his philosophy? What would happen in Ft Thomas if he went 2 years without a state title not doing these things if say hypothetically of course they lost to Cov Cath who was doing those things.

Before you answer with nothing I witnessed in 2005 they lost a home playoff game and the fans i was around told anyone that would listen how stupid he was and he didn't know anything about offense.

Winning gives you the luxury of doing things like you mentioned but let a coach at Dixie, Boone, Simon or any other school who doesn't win state titles and they would be called lazy.

Dont want this to turn into a Highlands vs CovCath thingy

Lots of great opinions on this topic. For the record, I also wish the dead period was 3-4 weeks long. Football and basketball have become year round sports in high school. Kids need a break, as do their parents. I liked the June 15-July 15 deal, but the KHSAA will never allow that. Three weeks would be ideal though.
