Covington Catholic Colonels

I like the idea of two platooning a lot. However, I don't think it's a bad idea at all to teach kids multiple positions just in case the injury bug bites really hard. If having a kid play some downs on Defense while being a full time starter on offense gives you the best opportunity to win, then that's what needs to be done. I think having strictly offensive and defensive players has hampered the Colonels in the past.

This is exactly what Freshman Coach Ted Edgington had in mind when he took the job, I believe he told Wirth that if freshman can't play both ways, he isn't coaching. So now the freshman team are learning two positions. Offense and a defensive position. Just like the CYF the best 11 play. I think this will be a blessing more than a burden.

I don't think Coach Edgington made any such declaration- it was probably more of a mutual decision between he and Coach Wirth to make a slight change in philosophy by having kids practice (and where possible, play) offense and defense and then in the off season, let the varsity coaches review film, speak with the Freshmen coaches and decide for themselves on which side they bring more value to the team.

That was just what I heard, but I didn't understand. Thanks for clarifying.

As of now, I believe there are only 3 starters out. Burchell will be back early in the season. Hatter had his appendix out and is expected to be cleared as early as this week. Better to get this out of the way now and (knock on wood) have a healthy season.

Bad idea. Reason why a lot are down on CYF team. You will lose kids this way. You get 20+ kids ready. This is all about getting kids ready for varsity. All it takes is 3 kids of the 11 to quit and then where are you. You get anyone who shows potential and interest ready so they want to continue to play. Besides, you don't know who will peak in size, others who may not have reached puberty. Highlands is the blueprint, not this way.

I like the idea. You make some good points but if you look at it, this is the largest freshman class In 40 years and te CYF had great success playing both ways. But Coach Edgington has the learning a defense position and an offensive position because you bever know what they will play down the road. 6 inches and 50 pounds later a lot could change.

Lets be clear since it seems this thread has taken this direction- the CYF always makes efforts to get as many kids playing time as possible: two platooning etc. - that's not always reasonable however.

Last year in both 7th and 8th, the CYF had a fairly even mix of some kids going both ways and some going one way. Further they fielded an 8th grade JV team and a 7th grade JV team. I would wager to say that the JV kids from both teams got more real time game experience when you lumped in the time from their JV games and time coming off the bench for the regular league games.

I cant believe numbers are down because of playing two ways. And let's put it into perspective- down numbers for CYF is everyone else's normal or high. The 8th graders who won the large school middle school championship last year have remained almost completely intact as Freshmen. The 7th graders who lost in the small school championship game lost some numbers going in to the 8th grade. It comes and goes in cycles.

But again- as a matter of principle, the CYF strives to make a two platoon group for game day although all the boys practice both sides of the ball during the week.

Hearing that another LB, Drake Ficke has broken a foot. That makes two down. Who can we look to step up? And how long before Sam burchell and drake return?

How about couple of the Freshman?

Well done. :thumb:

I'm not sure if this is sarcastic or not. But can anyone confirm this injury?
