July 9, 201313 yr I think that all speed limits should be eliminated. Not just highways, but city streets, school zones, country roads, construction zones...all public roads. Speeding hurts no one, I'm the one having to pay for the gas why can't I waste it at any rate that I want to? Wrecking and causing injury to others would only be illegal if it was deemed that I was driving faster than accepted norms for that stretch of road. All cars would have a "Black Box" that would only record speed at time of impact. Decriminalize reckless driving/ excessive speeding, If I wreck and just injure myself, the only person hurt is me (and my insurance company). If someone was riding with me when I wrecked driving 125mph then that's on them, they knew the danger before they got in the car with me. Benefits: Less traffic citations would be written. Traffic Court would all but be eliminated. All of the money spent patrolling the highways and streets looking for speed violators could be spent on real crime (as long as it's not drug enforcement) Police Departments would save money buying cheaper slower cars and not having to buy Radar or other speed detection devices. New found freedom from speed restrictions may cause drivers to drive at more moderate speeds and more cautiously, or Driving faster would sharpen the skills of drivers making them safer drivers. Also up for consideration: Legalizing DUI also except in the case of an accident involving DUI...after all unless they wreck drunk drivers do not going to hurt anyone else...

I was going to mention the DUI example. Should we eliminate DUI's? Say if you can make it home without crashing and injuring someone else...you are good?

Probably couldn't afford the auto insurance in above scenario and I'm not sure some drivers driving faster would "sharpen their driving skills".
July 9, 201313 yr Probably couldn't afford the auto insurance in above scenario and I'm not sure some drivers driving faster would "sharpen their driving skills". Driving faster on challenging roads makes me a better driver.
July 9, 201313 yr Driving faster on challenging roads makes me a better driver. Good for you, but I would always worry about that driver who can't handle it as they are texting.
July 9, 201313 yr Good for you, but I would always worry about that driver who can't handle it as they are texting. I stay as far as possible away from other drivers. That way I only have to worry about myself.

July 9, 201313 yr Author You just don't want anyone dinging your Jaguar. I would think if it's Jim's car that it would be a Shaguar!
July 9, 201313 yr So to clarify we are comparing speeding on a public road to consuming something on your private property?
July 9, 201313 yr Author So to clarify we are comparing speeding on a public road to consuming something on your private property? No not at all, I'm for eliminating the speed limit that was arbitrarily set by some government type people years ago without any regard to my ability to handle my car. Why should anyone tell me what speed I can drive while in my private property, spending money on fuel that I bought with my own money.
July 9, 201313 yr I love Jumper Dad. Not in the Vermont, Massachusetts, California kind of way, for the record. Although in those states, I suppose I could love Jumper Dad on my porch too.
July 9, 201313 yr So eliminating speed limits will help traffic? I can only imagine rush hour with half the people trying to drive 55 and the other half driving anywhere from 60-100 MPH. That would work out great.
