I will never understand why government employees that are paid with tax dollars would receive bonuses of any kind. It is not like a private company that makes a bunch of money and rewards it's employees with bonuses. We read about the thousands (and sometimes millions) of tax payer dollars being spent on trips to places for conventions, bonuses, etc for tax payer funded entities. Why is this allowed?

Are you opposed to bonuses of any kind for any and all government workers? "Government" jobs comprise more jobs than any other sector. Outside of these large scale operations most hear of abusing the system, most government jobs are paid poorly and any bonuses are minimal.

I don't think we can make a blanket statement that no govt employee can receive a bonus.

 

Depends on what was accomplished to earn it.

In private business you are usually provided bonuses for hitting certain 'targets'. May its the same at the IRS....just that the definition of 'target' is not a financial one!

I don't know but I wonder if different departments started giving out bonus money when salaries were frozen in 2009? That would be one way to get around the freeze yet still retain top employees. Still, doesn't seem right to me.

I guess my question is, why are they getting a bonus? Regardless of how poorly they are getting paid, government workers usually have very good retirement and benefits. They are considered "public servants". If they wanted to get paid more money, enjoy bonuses, company retreats, etc., they should work in the private sector.

 

Using the IRS as an example, my thought is that the IRS does not sell a product and earn a profit. They collect taxes from tax payers. What is being accomplished in order to receive a bonus? Are they collecting more taxes from more people and getting a bonus for it? Private sector companies normally give bonuses for meeting goals, which means they are making more profit than normal. The IRS does not make any profit and is funded by tax payers. It just doesn't make much sense to me that IRS employees are collecting bonuses and costing taxpayers more money.

I still think you are looking at this from an extremely high level and not thinking from a state and local perpective where most government workers are. You are just looking at high level abuses. Retirement and benefits were once an attraction, but the past decade has seen that gap between the private and public close considerably. You seen the KY State retirement system and its problems recently? 99% are not getting paid more money each year, bonuses are minuscule (locally workers have recently gotten a $25 Christmas Bonus which is then taxed), and most entities do not have retreats nor can they afford to.

This whole scenario with the IRS has more to do with collective bargaining than anything else.

True. I am thinking on more along the lines of the federal government.

If CEO' s of failing businesses can get multimillion dollar bonuses individually, I find nothing wrong with bonuses for government employees.

The CEO bonus are not (targeted) tax payer dollars. This sort of rationalization fails as an equivalent theory.

If you really want some tax savings, how about bringing home troops from nations perfectly able to defend themselves like Europe, Korea and Japan?

Oh how uninformed many of you are. What are the great benefits that Government Employees get, please tell me because I would like to know about them. Bonuses are earned based upon how you do your job, just like they are in the private sector. Those that exceed expectations may get an award and those that do not will not get one.

 

Many many haters out there. Perhaps if everyone paid their fair share of taxes at all levels of government we would not have all of the problems in the world that we have.
