How I would fix the bullpen

Featured Replies

I would call up Arredondo, and give Parra his walking papers. When Cueto returns I put Cingrani in the pen, and option Partch. When Marshall returns I send down Hoover.

Let's hear your thoughts and what moves you would make.

Arredondo has struggled to throw strikes thus far in AAA (21 walks in a similar # of innings), but he has electric stuff & was very good for the Reds last year. He was also suspended around Memorial Day this year for "disciplinary matters", whatever that means.

I think your suggestions are reasonable. I can't come up with anything better...

They sure have been quiet about his suspension.

He's back to pitching.

I think the Reds bullpen only gets better when Marshall comes back, and theyll have to trade a prospect for a quality guy at the deadline.

What quality guy you got in mind?

in a perfect world Casey Janssen from the Blue Jays, Betancourt from the Rockies, or Gregerson from the Padres

My top one would be Janssen. Hes a free agent after next year, and will be due a fairly good pay raise which is the last thing the Jays want. Offer them a few good prospects and I think they will listen

Coming into the season weren't you guys touting the bullpen as a strength, behind starting pitching? Some of this will work itself out over time, these guys are better than they have performed so far. That being said, if Marshall is not effective or is out longer than anticipated I put Cingrani in the pen. I think he'll continue to give up homer after homer trying to throw his 92 mph fastball 85% of the time as a starter. However, if he can throw that same fastball at 96 mph for an inning he can be a very effective reliever. The only drawback is you delay his progress as a starter for another season.

All of those guys are closers. The Reds don't need a closer. Look at someone like Jesse Crain, Steve Cishek or Charlie Furbush. They are very effective and won't require the prospects that a closer will. Cishek got off to a slow start but he has been great lately. Furbush can be electric.

Trade with the White Sox for either Jesse Crain or Addison Reed.

Once Cueto returns (assuming it's before Marshall), move Cingrani to the pen and release Parra. Once Marshall returns, send Cingrani back down to work on his secondary pitches.

Also, bring up Arrendondo and send down Partch.

They traded for Broxton last year, which tells me this year they can do it again. Jesse Crain was another one but forgot to mention. He's a FA after this season and the White Sox probably will deal him if they are out of it.

What happens when another starter hits the DL and Cingrani needs stretched back out to starter innings? Bad idea at this point in the season...

Wouldn't take long at all to stretch him back out.

You hope...
