Ryle 7 Covington Catholic 2 (9th Region 1st Round)

Featured Replies

Can you or TOG give me the batter by batter results in the 1st and 3rd inning when Davis was pitching.

I will be able to later, not at the current moment. My book is in my car and I am at work.

Trainers from both teams came out to check on the kid. I'm guessing by the fact that both allowed him to stay in he must not have been knocked out and he was not showing signs of a concussion.

Hopefully that is the case. Your comment got me to thinking. Would the Cov Cath trainer been able to prevent the player from continuing, if the Ryle trainer felt he could continue? I would have thought that the trainer from the other team would have no real say in the matter.

Just as an added point, I believe it is possible there were three trainers out there as Dixie is the host and thus, I believe, had a trainer there as well. Not sure who has the decision making power in a situation like this. Are they all equal? Does the host trainer have more say? Does the player's school trainer have more say? Sticky situation.

Folks, it sounds ridiculous in many ways to say this, but this season is what a down year looks like at Covington Catholic. The program at CCH is that good. With the talent they have in the building and Coach Krumpelbeck at the helm, they are going to get their 25 or more wins almost every year. When they don't get 25, IMO it is a down year at CCH. This season is the second fewest wins at CCH in the last ten years. So I recommend the naysayers get their shots in this year while they can. That is a heck of a testimony to how good CCH has been in baseball - a 23 win season that almost every other school would envy is a down year for the Colonels.

Thank you for the kind words!

Probably shouldn't have given the impression that this team should be lumped in with the previous.

CovCath hits all of the checkmarks each year 20 wins , strong schedule, good players.

They often have the most talent.

They haven't won the region since about 2004 or 2005 despite having great talent. Sure there are years where upsets can happen but this run goes way past that as being an excuse.

That's why I said they are overhyped.

I'll go ahead and give you all batter by batter results for Davis pitching.

1st Inning

1. Lonnemann: Strike (0-1), Single (flair over the second baseman)

2. J Brennan: Strike (0-1), Ball (1-1), Strike (1-2) ** I believe it was on this pitch that Lonnemann was caught stealing 2-4 1 out**, Foul (1-2), Ball (2-2), Ball (3-2), Pop out to the first baseman 2 outs

3. Forbes: Strike (0-1), Strike (0-2), Foul (0-2), Foul (0-2), Ball (1-2), Foul (1-2), Triple (line drive to deep left center field)

4. Mason: Ball (1-0), Infield single to the shortstop - Forbes scores 1-0 Ryle

5. Baumann: Flyout to the right fielder 3 outs

2nd Inning

1. Deters: Ball (1-0), Ball (2-0), Ball (3-0), Strike (3-1), Walks on pitch number 5

2. Clarkson: Strike (0-1), Ball (1-1), Popped out to the catcher 1 out

3. Plvan: Strike (0-1), Ball (1-1), Ball (2-1), Strike (2-2), Struck out swinging 2 outs

4. Ashley: Srike (0-1), Strike (0-2), Ball (1-2), Foul (1-2), Grounded into a fielders choice - Deters forced out 5 to 4 3 outs

3rd Inning

1. Lonnemann: Ball (1-0), Ball (2-0), Ball (3-0), Walks on pitch number 4

2. J Brennan: Fly out to center 1 out

3. Forbes: Ball (1-0), Single (hard ground ball to right center) - Lonnemann advances to third

4. Rains (Hitting for injured Mason): Strike (0-1), Ball (1-1) - Forbes steals second and Pope's throw goes over the covering second baseman and shortstop, Lonnemann advances home on E2 2-0 Ryle, Ball (2-1), Strike (2-2), Line out to center 2 outs

5. Baumann: Strike (0-1), Strike (0-2), Ball (1-2), Ball (2-2), Singles on a flair over the shortstop/third baseman - Forbes scores 3-0 Ryle

6. Deters: Strike (0-1), Ball (1-1), Singles on a soft line drive to right field - Baumann is thrown out at 3rd on a 9-5 3 outs

Probably shouldn't have given the impression that this team should be lumped in with the previous.

Keep it real, please tell me when the last team from the Ninth won a State Title, other than CovCath in 2002?

At least we have a Championship Trophy in our trophy case for playing Baseball and your team?

Oh and I will be in Lexington tonight to see one of our kids playing The Lexington Legends. He isn't in the show yet but at least he is getting paid to play the game I remember him playing for fun back in the day!

Are you trying to make my point?

I assume you mean Isler in Lexington. Add in Maile. Add in some other really good hitters on that team and in that class and yet they got bupka in the region. Is that on the players all 3 years? Is on the coach? Did they underachieve as a team? 2012 class was deep and talented as well but also got bupka.

I see you didn't answer my question now did you! :lol2:

So since Krumps has won a State Baseball Title and no current Ninth Region Coach has won a State Title, Krumps is a bad coach? I understand your thinking! :ohbrother:

BTW to make it easy on you, Holmes 1963. Link

So the only Coach in recent history, heck in ancient history in the Ninth Region to win a State Baseball Title is CovCath Krumps and he is a bad coach per you!

And you have how many victories as a HS baseball coach?

BTW Krumps has... 842 through the 2012 season Link

What does 1963 and 2002 have to do with the point?

I asked the question about recent failures - how do we assess responsibility? All on the Maile/Isler/Darner/Nutinni players? Is that who we're placing blame on? Or does the staff share in the blame?

Do we agree that a team with 2 high D1 players who ended up being drafted in the first 10 rounds who had some really talented teammates should win a region that hasn't won the state title other than in 1963 adn 2002? It's not exactly Murderer's Row on an annual basis.

Many people hear annually how CovCath has the best talent yet there is not much to show for it in the last 8 years. That seems like the definition of overhyped.

And no other team since 1963 has anything to show for it either from the Ninth Region other than CovCath and Coach Krumps!

Again tell me how many victories do you have and titles you have won? Pretty easy to be a Monday morning wanna be coach, on BGP's.

I agree that CCH seems to have the annual hype around its program but I question who the source of the hype is. I'm sure there are years when the coaching staff thinks they have the talent to win district, region, or state but I'm betting that's not shared outside the lockerroom. The majority of hype comes from the two worst sources in the history of sports - parents and individual players.

As for the losses in regional games, I'm sure that you can find blame or fault on all levels of the team. Coaching decision, player errors, mental mistakes all contribute. I do think that sometimes after a loss in a one and out format too many times we look for reasons why the losing team didn't win - maybe it's simply because for that game the winning team was better. That shouldn't be an indictment of a programs success or failure especially when that program has achieved a level of sustained success such as Cov Cath.

I know the Cov Cath faithful want to find fault with Krumps and use him as the reason for going a whole 8 years without a regional and you may be right, but for a different reason. Perhaps in setting the standard of success (along with Max) over such an extended time, he has raised the bar to which other teams strive to achieve. In doing so, other coaches (many of whom played for him) have established programs that are his equal.

Make no mistake, he will win another region title (or 2) as he hasn't forgotten how to coach. I for one will congratulate him when he does as it will be well deserved

I forgot to give a shoutout to CCH's David Zalla. I really like his game plus he comes from a STRONG family. Well done, DZ.

I'll go ahead and give you all batter by batter results for Davis pitching.

3rd Inning

6. Deters: Strike (0-1), Ball (1-1), Singles on a soft line drive to right field - Baumann is thrown out at 3rd on a 9-5 3 outs

Perfect illustration of how a pitching line doesn't tell the complete picture.

First inning: LF and CF hauled tail after the ball hit by Mason Forbes. Problem is neither backed up the other and they turned a double into a triple. Great effort on their part but one has to defer to the other and not give up the extra base. Next batter hits an infield single. Runner may have had to hold at second - at worst he gets to third. Next batter ends the inning. While there were no errors and the run counts as an earned run it's a run that shouldn't have scored.

CCH had a few other "little" plays on D that hurt later as well. Now they got beat by 5 so the play I mentioned above certainly didn't cost them the game. However, momentum is a funny thing and it certainly went their side after that first inning.

Again , I thought David pitched pretty well against a really good team.
