I played fastpitch for many years, I've always said it's a tougher game than baseball.

Good stuff. I try to tell baseball guys that the games are similar but a lot of differences. A shortstop in softball can't set her feet , do a crow hop, and then fire a seed like a baseball shortstop can.

 

JMU, my daughter had nowhere NEAR the swing your daughter does. Not close. However, due to her speed and being a lefty she hit .400 her senior year and many of the balls never left the infield. She got it down on the 3rd base side and simply beat the throws.

2 totally different games. I will say at the high school varsity level you will find more baseball teams with better players at their specific sport. What I mean by this is you will have all 9 fielding positions usually manned by better skilled players than at softball. I hope this is coming across the right way, not saying there aren't great players playing fast pitch softball, but that all 9 positions are't always filled with the good to great fielders. Softball usually comes down to 2 things, an ace pitcher and good hitting. You can go an entire season with 1 great pitcher and do pretty good, what I mean is a team can pitch the same player almost every single game.

Your point is valid and it's due to the difference in youth leagues that are available. Although softball is now catching up it will be a few years before we see an increase in the number of quality players.

Softball is just a faster game. Infield speed is crazy at times. I've seen many good baseball players throw in the towel when it came to fast pitch soft ball. I have seen and faced many pitchers who threw the ball in the middle and upper 80's, and a guy from Philadelphia? that had to be close to 100 mph. Please note that I used the term faced them, not hit against them.

That's awesome, that is quickly becoming a lost art in softball at all levels. You know what they say chicks did the long ball!!

 

Yes the games are a lot alike, I would say the biggest difference just seems to be there are more moving parts in softball than in baseball, bunting is a lot more important bunt defense is even more important. Like you say the defense doesn't have much time to act either. SS can almost never wait on a ball and I know I work with my daughter on doing her best at staying on her feet and trying to make a play.

For NKY fastpitch I would agree 1000% you go to other parts of the state and it might not be quite as bad. Lexington lafayette came up and played at Boone County this weekend and they had a team full of ball players, they had a couple of really good players but it seemed like all of them were good athletes that knew the game. Their top couple players were no better than Boone's or Holy Cross's top players but maybe 4-9 were FAR ahead.

Watched a local all-star team made up of former HS and a few college baseball players play against the King and his Court traveling 4 man Softball team. Only guys that got a bat on the ball were when the King let them by throwing a change up and telling them before hand that it was coming. He actually struck a guy out pitching from second base.

As a fan/parent that has watched my kids play both sports, I wholly enjoy watching softball more, just due to the speed of the game.

Baseball is the greatest!

 

Girls fastpitch softball when played well is fun. As for old men that couldn't hit the little ball, then I guess softball is okay.

 

We already know what the great male softball homerun boppers would do against major league pitchers, and that is why they are playing softball.

Same here, I still enjoy watching the major league but to watch HS or little league is brutal when you see a ton of softball each year.

Go to states like California, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Oklahoma (yes I know these are states where you can pretty much play year round) and you do not see the 1 pitcher and good hitting thing. The whole team is solid. The issue is Kentucky is about 10 years behind in certain locations of the state when it comes to fast pitch. The leagues are horrible and very little is taught when it comes to the fundamentals of the games.
