Pulaski County, KY (WKYT) An 11-year-old elementary school student will have to appear before a juvenile court after he reported to a teacher that he mistakenly brought a gun to school Monday.

 

"Within a matter of minutes, the child realized what he had in his pocket and told his teacher," said Keith Patrick Principle at Southern Elementary in Somerset.

 

Patrick said the boy claimed he forgot he had the loaded pistol in his cargo pants pocket. "None of the staff knew and neither did any of the students. It was never seen or out in the open at anytime," explained the Principle.

 

The school said they sent the letter home with every student in an effort to keep parents informed, but they did not make any calls since the gun was removed instantly. Still, some parents are surprised the 11-year-old even had a gun, at all. "How does a child get a loaded gun?" questioned Ford, who has a student at the neighboring middle school. "Are they going to do something to the parent?"

So far there doesn't seem to be too big of an uproar...sounds like Child, Teacher, School Admin and Resource Officer all handled it correctly. The real issue is why was it in his pants to begin with...parents will have to answer some hard questions from someone.

Do you remember being 11? He could have overslept, jumped up slipped on a pair of pants he wore the day before and left the gun in his pocket from the night before and not think twice about it. Get on the bus ride it to school, panic when he realizes that it is still in his pocket and goes and tells the first person he trust (His teacher). Could be an honest mistake by the kid.

Exactly what I was thinking, how many times to I put on pants I have wore the day before or something and said, why is that in my pocket.

 

Kid could have been out shooting the night before or something.

I will assume that responsible parents keep any and all guns locked up and away from their children.

I'm saying guns should not be left around where kids can get to them without adult supervision. Careless and it could POTENTIALLY lead to injury/death.

Gotcha, and I agree with this. Did it say what type of gun it was (besides a pistol)

I heard that it was a .25 subcompact pistol...had been target shooting the day before and forgot it was in his pocket when he got home...put pants on and went to school. This IMO is on dad, I took my son shooting plenty of times but I always accounted for all of the firearms before going home.

I'm not saying it wasn't an honest mistake. I do believe it was or it could have been. I also think I would have felt that gun in my pocket before I left the house. He can't be that big at 11 can he? Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

 

I hate that he is in juvenile detention. Especially since he went to a teacher. He easily could have been bringing it to school to show off and somebody may have said they were telling and he went and told on himself first. I'd say there are a bunch of possible scenarios. I hate it for the kid though. I just wonder the whole story and not the one he's rehearsing right now.

I was 5'8" tall 170 ish at 11 years old so he could be a big boy, idk him to confirm.
