Great game, great pitchers duel. Very few hits, both teams left runners in scoring postion throughout the game but pitching was shutting batters down when they needed to.

 

Fogle is clutch as usual with big hit in the 9th.

 

Cooper had a chance to win it in the 7th with runner on 3rd and 1 out. First pitch to batter they tried a squeeze play but Conner was ready for it and threw a pitch out and tagged runner out at home. Live and die by small ball, tonight Cooper died by it.

Great game. Pitchers were on. Some great defense behind the pitchers. Congrats to the cougars.

Curious what some of the Cooper fans thought about this squeeze call? Personally, I liked it. All you have to do is get the bunt down, that's not on the coach. Are you sure Conner threw a pitch out? From my angle it just looked like an outside pitch that got away a bit from Maines.

I have no problem with a suicide squeeze play, but I wouldn't of tried it on the very first pitch. It wasn't an wild pitch, it looked very well like it was a purpose outside pitch to see if the squeeze was on. I would of tried the squeeze but not until the 3rd pitch to see if Conner was looking for it on that 1st or 2nd pitch, which they were.

 

Cooper for the past 2 years has lived and mostly died by small ball. Just look at yesterday's game, everytime Cooper had a base runner with 1 or less outs they bunted. They've done that all season and last season also...although last year it was even more if you can believe that. I'm personally not a fan of small ball played that way. I like small ball but only in the right situations, not every single time a runner is on. All you do is give the other team a free out.

 

In that situation, knowing how much cooper loves trying to play small ball and knowing that a run wins the game, you have to be looking for a squeeze play...everyone in the stands saw it coming. You can't try that on the first pitch period when it's expected.

I just wouldn't have tried it on the very first pitch. Keep the pitcher and his team guessing, don't show your cards the very first opportunity.

Absolutely thisguy....one of the best plays in the game and if EXECUTED properly indefensible.

First pitch, third pitch, whenever. Its all about the coaches "gut"and instinct on when to call it. It works, he's a hero, it doesn't he's a goat. Either way I bet you it happens again next time.

If you're for trying suicide squeezes with two outs, that's all I need to know about your baseball knowledge.

Why would you suicide squeeze with the winning run on 3rd and one out when all you need is a pop up to the outfield and you win???

 

If you do it with 2 outs, get the bunt down, run scores and you win. And if you don't get it down then oh well. Go play extras.

 

Why waste the opportunity for a sacrifice fly? A hard ground ball that gets through, a throwing error to first base?? Your chances of getting that run across with 1 out are far better than wasting it with a sacrifice bunt attempt.

 

But hey, I'm probably wrong.

I wouldn't with 2 outs. I would suicide with 1 but not on the first pitch when everybody including the ticket taker knows its coming.
